1 hour per week. 🟡 Students will receive access to 1-2 homework assignments each week throughout the course. These are small tasks that I feel would be more suitable as an individual activity rather than an in-class activity. 🟡 We will also complete two projects. These projects can be as time/labor-intensive as your student wants to make them, the purpose of the project is to give students an opportunity to show their understanding of the topic. I will give them several ideas to choose from, but they also have the option to come up with their own project idea for consideration. 🟡 A vocabulary quiz and a unit test are also provided for those that would like to test their knowledge in this way. 📣 We let all students know that assignments, projects, and tests are optional based on what the adult in charge of their education requires them to do.Assessment
📒 We grade and/or give feedback on all work completed by the student, and a report card will be available for each student. 📒 We also informally asses students by using Nearpod during lessons, and by using their verbal or chat box responses to questions and discussions during the live lesson. 📒 Adults can access assignments and grades at all times through the link given at the beginning of the course.Grading

These "Spectacular Science" courses are a fantastic way to meet your student's science curriculum needs! This class is part 2 of a 5-part series designed to cover an entire year of science for your 7th or 8th grader. Students will meet live once a week and be provided with optional assignments to complete outside of our live class time. Classes and assignments will include activities designed to capture every type of learner including illustrating, organizing, reading, writing, watching, researching, exploring, and even game-style activities! I'm a firm believer in creating quality, engaging learning experiences, and I know middle school students will look forward to each class. 📍This specific course will focus on diving deep into beginning chemistry. Objectives Include 👇 ✔️ Describe the difference between an element and a compound, and understand what elements mostly make up Earth, living matter, oceans, and the atmosphere. ✔️Describe the structure of atoms, including the masses, electrical charges, and locations of protons, neutrons, and electrons. ✔️ Identify that protons determine an element’s identity. ✔️ Identify that valence electrons determine an atom’s chemical properties, including reactivity and interpret the arrangement of the Periodic Table to explain how properties are used to classify elements (including groups and periods). ✔️Describe the basic differences in elements, molecules, and compounds. ✔️Determine the number of molecules in a chemical equation. ✔️Investigate how evidence of chemical reactions indicate that new substances with different properties are formed. 📍Course Outline: 🧬Class 1 → Classification of Matter 🧬 Class 2 → The Structure of Atoms 🧬 Class 3 → Periodic Table Trends 🧬 Class 4 - Review Game Day! 🧬 Class 5 → Molecules 🧬 Class 6 → Chemical Changes 🧬 Class 7 → Chemical Changes Continued 🧬 Class 8 - Review Game Day! 📍We will explore these topics in 8 live class periods. Students will be provided with 2 weekly assignments, 2 optional vocabulary quizzes, 2 optional unit tests, and 2 optional projects. (Projects can be as time/labor-intensive as the student chooses) 📣 Quarters 1, 2, 3, & 4 are NOT required before taking this course. Courses can be taken in any order! 📣 ❔ If you have any questions about this unit feel free to message me. I would be happy to try to accommodate your child's schedule if one of my current class times does not meet your needs. ❔ 🧪🔬🧬 Spectacular Science Series 🧬🔬🧪 📍5th-6th Grade📍 Q1- Biomes / Abiotic & Biotic Interactions Q2- Planets / Seasons Q3- States of Matter / Properties of Water Q4- Cell Theory / Plant & Animal Cells Q5 - (4-Week Class) Lunar Cycle 📍6th & 7th Grade📍 Q1- Body Systems - Emphasis on Nervous System Q2- Conduction, Convection, & Radiation / Energy Transformations Q3- Weather Maps & Air Pressure / Convection Currents Q4- Plate Tectonics / Volcanoes Q5- (4-Week Class) Hurricane Formation 📍7th & 8th Grade📍 Q1- Structure of Life - Genetics Q2- Classification of Matter, the Periodic Table, & Chemical Changes Q3- TBD Q4- TBD Q5- (4-Week Class) TBD
Learning Goals
NGSS MS- PS1.A: Structure and Properties of Matter
Substances are made from different types of atoms, which combine with one another in various ways. Atoms form molecules that range in size from two to thousands of atoms.
NGSS MS-PS1.A: Each pure substance has characteristic physical and chemical properties (for any bulk quantity under given conditions) that can be used to identify it.
NGSS MS-PS1.B: Substances react chemically in characteristic ways. In a chemical process, the atoms that make up the original substances are regrouped into different molecules, and these new substances have different properties from those of the reactants.

Kahoot will be used during our last class only as a review tool. It does not require an account.
Nearpod will be used during our instructional classes as an interactive presentation tool. It does not require an account.
Google Classroom will be used to distribute activities and materials. All private messages will remain on Outschool. This does require a google email to use as a log in.
Supply List
Learners may need to print a few handouts throughout the course, or have access to view handouts on a separate device during class. (Less than 5 pages per unit.) We use Nearpod, Kahoot, and Google Classroom for these courses, but take the time to clearly explain and provide support for each of these!

I’m Elizabeth, owner and online teacher at Sparkology. I’m also a mom, and I get it - we have to be masters at juggling roles in today’s world. Every day we are parents, tutors, teachers, principals and curriculum designers! Playing every part in your child’s parenting and education is exhausting.
So when it comes to helping your kids understand and enjoy subjects you’re not an expert in, it’s the cherry on top of your stress. That’s why we offer unforgettable classes for 3rd through 8th grade that are sure to keep your kid learning - and having tons of fun along the way.
Our classes do so much more than give you a much-needed break. Your kid will be excited to join class each week. Each class and assignment is designed to spark curiosity and make learning fun.
