In this ongoing weekly summer class, students will review 2nd Grade Foundational Reading Skills. You will see weekly topics listed BUT these topics will be revisited multiple times each class through the semester , so your student can join in at any time! This class is perfect for: 🔵 Students who have completed first grade and want to get a head start on 2nd Grade Skills. 🔵 Students who have finished second grade but would like to have some more practice with those foundational reading...
Students will learn the basic foundational reading skills for success in the second grade. Phonics and Word Recognition RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words. a. Distinguish long and short vowels when reading regularly spelled one-syllable words. b. Know spelling-sound correspondences for additional common vowel teams. c. Decode regularly spelled two-syllable words with long vowels. d. Identify, decode and know the meaning of words with the most common prefixes and derivational suffixes. e. Identify words with inconsistent but common spelling-sound correspondences. f. Recognize and read grade-appropriate irregularly spelled words. Fluency RF.2.4 Read fluently (accuracy, speed and prosody) on grade-level to support comprehension. a. Read grade-level text with purpose and understanding. b. Orally read grade-level text fluently on successive readings. c. Use context to confirm or self-correct word recognition and understanding, rereading as necessary Language/Vocabulary a. proper sentence structure. b. parts of speech c. multiple meaning words d. root words e. use of context clues/glossaries and dictionaries to find meanings of unknown words.
