In this engaging ongoing comprehension class, students will learn to read for comprehension using the big five comprehension skills with fiction and nonfiction passages. At the beginning of class, I will introduce the focus skill(s) for the day and establish a clear purpose for reading. We will do some pre-reading activities, and then we will read the passage together. Each week we will discuss the passage focusing on one or more of the comprehension skills (context clues, making inferences, recalling basic information from the text, sequencing events in the text, discussing the main idea, and finding details to support the main idea). We will organize our thoughts and information using graphic organizers and worksheets.

Comprehension questions are effective because they give students a purpose for reading, focus students' attention on what they are to learn, help students to think actively as they read, encourage students to monitor their comprehension, and help students review content and relate what they have learned to what they already know.

We will read second-grade passages, however, this class will be a good fit for many first graders who are reading above grade level, as well as many third graders who could use a little help with comprehension. This class is great for ESL learners as well! It is not necessary for all students to be on the same fluency or comprehension level, as I will challenge those students who are ready for it and gently guide those students who need a little more assistance.

Because this is an ongoing class, students may jump in at any point and they will not be behind!

I always try to accommodate transfer requests, but my classes are not on the same lesson each week so please be aware if you request a transfer into another section, that section will most likely not be on the same schedule and there is a chance your child will repeat a lesson.

**I have obtained written permission from the creator of the passages we will read to use in my Outschool classes.
**I have created OR gained written permission to use the graphic organizers in my Outschool classes.

Hello! I am so happy to be here and tell you a little about myself. I have been a certified teacher and reading specialist for over two decades and greatly enjoy creating and teaching courses that are fun for the students, packed with value, and super engaging! I am a kind and encouraging teacher, and I love to acknowledge every success in the classroom-big and small! I have created the following curriculum with your learner in mind! For preschoolers just beginning to learn letters and sounds, I recommend starting with my PreK course that covers not only reading, but also math, science, and social studies content. For those students who do not need an entire Pre-K course or those that know letters and sounds and are ready to begin reading CVC words, I recommend taking my ongoing classes in the following order starting with the first class (Feel free to copy and paste or scroll down past this profile to go directly to the class links). For those learners who know most CVC words or can easily sound those words out, I recommend beginning with the second class.

1. Pre-K & Kinder: Complete Curriculum & Circle Time (Meets 4 Times per Week). This is an ongoing, YEAR-ROUND course where we will cover all standards for PreK and most Kinder standards as well. Your learner can jump in at any time and not be behind.

2. Let's Learn to Read (Beginners): Blending and Reading CVC Words in Word Families (eighteen-week content rotation cycle) This course is also available as a FLEXible 10-week course option for those that would like to take this class but can't find the class time you need.

3. Beginning Reading Skills: Blend, Read, Spell, and Write CVC and Silent E Words (fifteen-week content rotation cycle)

4. Sight Word Science: A Better Way! Learning Tricky Parts by Heart (Kinder/First) (16-week content rotation cycle) This class can be taken in conjunction with my Bossy E class if your learner has a good grasp of CVC words, letters, and sounds.

5. First Grade Reading Skills: (Beyond CVC and Silent E) Diphthongs, Digraphs, Vowel Teams, and Blends (20-week content rotation cycle). This class can be taken in conjunction with Sight Word Science if students have a good grasp of CVC and CVCe words.

6. Reading Fluency Practice: Increasing Fluency with Fun Timed Challenges Using First and Second-Grade Fiction and Nonfiction Passages: This class can be taken in conjunction with Sight Words Made Easy if your child has a good foundation of CVC and CVCe words. It is ideal for students in first and second grade or very strong readers in kindergarten. This is an ongoing class that meets once a week.

7. Book Club For Beginners: Gaining Confidence in Fluency & Comprehension: Level 1
In this ongoing class, we will meet twice per week to read aloud, have discussions, play games, and complete extension activities to increase learners' reading confidence.

8. 2nd Grade Reading Comprehension: This class is for students in first grade who are strong readers, students on second-grade reading level, or students in third grade who may need a little extra help. This class focuses heavily on comprehension, so if your child needs fluency practice, see my previous three classes on this list! This is an ongoing class that meets once per week covering the five big comprehension skills (direct recall, inferences/predictions, unfamiliar vocabulary using context clues, main idea and details, and sequencing) using second-grade fiction and nonfiction passages.

9. Reading Fluency: Fun Timed Reading Challenges With 3rd Grade Passages. This class is ideal for students who are reading at a higher 2nd-grade level or a lower 3rd-grade level, or those who have taken my first fluency class using first and second-grade passages.
