🌟 Instruction follows the Phono-Graphix method for teaching reading and spelling which was developed with students with Dyslexia in mind. The Phono-Graphix method is very similar to Orton-Gillingham and is based on the Science of Reading. 🤓 Research shows that repetitive practice with new skills helps us learn information faster and retain it longer. Practice sessions should be spread out over a week or more to be most effective. That's why this class has three meetings over the course of a week to ensure that the words are not only learned but retained long-term. 🌟 This class meets on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays each week. Due to the nature of the weekly activities, it is best to start this class on a Monday. 📝 Students will be assigned a weekly spelling list of 15 words at the beginning of each week. During live classes, we will discuss patterns in the words and spelling rules as they apply. A list of 15 words will be provided, as well as 5 bonus words to meet the needs of a wide range of skill levels. 📝 Students will be expected to participate by writing the spelling words as modeled and trying different ways to study the words using colors and shapes. We will also discuss proper usage and share creative work. 📝 Students will learn to divide words into "chunks" (similar to syllables) and segment each chunk to identify all the sounds in the words. Learners will use a color and shape coding system as a study tool to focus on sounds spelled with more than one letter. 📝 Homework assignments will be given at the end of the first and second live classes. 📝 Students can expect a low-pressure spelling test during our Friday class period. Each week a new list will be assigned. 👀 Learners will need to know the sounds of all the letters of the alphabet, as well as letter combinations like: sh, th, ch, and ck. There are 22 different lists in the program. Each week focuses on a different spelling pattern or sound. 🗓 Weekly breakdown for 2024: Week of 4/29/24: Long E words with 'ee' and 'ea' like in, "speak, beep, and seal" Week of 5/6/24: Long A words spelled with -ay and -ai like in "today, paint, play, and rain" Week of 5/13/24: Long I words spelled with -y and -igh Week of 5/20/24: Long O words spelled with -oa, and -ow like in, "coach and throw" Week of 5/27/24: Words with the sound /er/ spelled with -ir, -ur, and -er like in, "nurse, winter, and skirt" Week of 6/3/24: Words with the sound /ow/ spelled with -ow and -ou like in, "house and town" Week of 6/10/24: Words with the sound /oy/ spelled with -oy and -oi like in, "choice and enjoy" Week of 6/17/24: Words with the sound /oo/ spelled with -ew, -oo, -ui like in, "drew, mood, and fruit" Week of 6/24/24: Words with -oo and -oul spelling the sound in "foot, brook, and could" Week of 7/1/24: Words with the Short O sound like in, "haunt, draw, and naughty" Week of 7/8/24: Words with Long E and Long I spelled with -ie like in, "cookie, tie, brownie, and lie" Week of 7/15/24: Long A words spelled with -eigh, -ei, -ea like in, "freight, vein, and steak" Week of 7/22/24: Hard and Soft C words like, "taco, pencil, card, and spicy" Week of 7/29/24: Hard and Soft G words like, "giant, goal, cage, and huge" Week of 8/5/24: Two syllable words with long vowel sounds Week of 8/12/24: Two syllable words with short vowel sounds Week of 8/19/24: Prefixes un- and re- like in "rewind, unfair, untie, and review" Week of 8/26/24: Words with -ly, -ful, and -er endings like in, "quickly, baker, painful" Week of 9/2/24: Contractions like, "you'll, won't, I'm, and isn't" Week of 9/9/24: Words with -ing endings like, "spilling, hugging, and jumping" Week of 9/16/24: Consonant blends spr-, scr-, and str- like in, "scream, sprout, and stress" ****Content repeats after the week of 9/16/24 💪 This class is also offered in a self-paced format for students who prefer not to attend live classes. I am a state-certified Elementary Teacher who has become aware of the absence of structured spelling instruction in the schools today. In my private reading tutoring practice, I have watched my students become strong and independent spellers by using my approach. I have taught over a thousand spelling students on Outschool since March 2020 in second through middle school grade levels.
