Class experience

US Grade 1 - 3
Aligned with State-Specific Standards
1. Students will learn the proper spellings of second-grade-level words and their usage in the English language.

2. Special focus on phonemic awareness, homophones, and words that just don't fit the "rules".

3. Students will gain confidence in their spelling, reading, and writing skills.
I am a state-certified Elementary Teacher who has become aware of the absence of structured spelling instruction in the schools today. In my private reading tutoring practice, I have watched my students become strong and independent spellers by using my approach. I have taught over a thousand spelling students on Outschool since March 2020 in second through middle school grade levels.
Homework Offered
Students will write sentences or a story with their spelling words. There are also worksheets assigned with different activities and puzzles. The homework assignments, including the worksheets, are the same each week but the worksheets are customized to each weekly list. Optional digital activities are also customized to the weekly lists.
0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
There is a pre-recorded spelling test available to the student each week. Completing the test is optional but highly encouraged so students can track their progress.
Grades Offered
Grades are available upon request but only if homework assignments and the spelling test have been submitted to the teacher.
The method of instruction used in this class is Phono-Graphix which is based on the Science of Reading and is Dyslexia-friendly.
Students need to know at least one sound for each letter. (All vowels have more than one sound but students need to know at least one of those sounds.) They also need to know these letter combinations: sh, th, ch, and ck.

CEFR Level A2-B1
Learners should be prepared to attend class with paper to write on, a pencil, and a set of at least three different colors of colored pencils or fine-tipped markers. Crayons are acceptable. Students will need lined writing paper for their optional spelling test.
All the content of this class is teacher-created.
