US Grade Kindergarten - 3
This ongoing class is a continuation of my one-time class (with the same title) that allows me to analyze an assessment and plan individualized instruction. If you are interested in this class, please contact me for more information. I do not schedule this class for public enrollment. These classes are based on the simple view of reading. The Simple View of Reading is: Decoding (D) x Language Comprehension (LC) = Reading Comprehension (RC) In this course, I will start building the bridge to reading comprehension by focusing on the basics of decoding. After analysis of the previous assessment and class performance, I will create an instructional plan appropriate for the learner. This plan will follow a scope and sequence that allows the learner to master reading and spelling the 6 syllable types in single and multi syllable words. As learners work through the 6 syllable types(D), they will also be introduced to high frequency words (HFW) that look like they should follow the syllable patterns, but break the syllable rules. They will be given strategies to help remember these words. Once students have learned a new syllable type, they will be expected to go on a word hunt in their favorite books and bring to class and share. The student will read the sentence or 2 with the word in it (LC) and tell me about what is happening in their book. (RC). This will help transfer their decoding skills to real life reading. Format for the classes (always subject to change depending on the learner) * Warm up activity -review of a skill, student sharing homework, or a phonemic awareness activity * Introduce a new or expand on a previous syllable type or skill * Practice the new syllable in reading single and multi syllable words * Reading passages with the targeted syllable type or skill to promote fluency.(this will not be in every class) * Practice High Frequency Words (HFW) that are rule breaker for a syllable generalization (this will not be in every class) * Practice spelling words (single, multi syllable and HFW) though dictation. THIS CLASS TIME AND PRICE CAN BE ADJUSTED TO A 30 MINUTE CLASS FOR $35. PLEASE GET IN TOUCH WITH ME BEFORE ENROLLING IF THIS IS SOMETHING YOU PREFER OVER 45 MINUTES. Wk 1 What is a syllable? Students will learn the definition of a syllable and we will do some phonological awareness activities to practice counting and manipulating syllables in words Wk 2 Intro the first syllable type that the students needs to learn. This will be determined by an assessment given in a previous class. Wk 3 Review the syllable type and continue to practice in reading passages and favorite books Wk 4 Learn Irregular words that look like they follow the syllable pattern but do not. Students will be given strategies to help learn these words. All needed documents will be provided for printing prior to each class. Please be sure to print off any materials before class starts. Your child will also need a white broad, marker, and eraser. These tools will be used in almost every class as a means to interact and provide feedback to me so I can gauge their learning and help pace the class. Please have these ready to use at any time.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Arkansas Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
In my 25+ years of teaching I have been trained in all kinds of different ways to teach students to read. This most recent method of teaching students to understand how and why letters make different sounds when put with other letters and placed in certain parts of the words has completely changed my way of thinking. I have seen huge gains in the students I work with in my brick and mortar school by teaching students the syllable types and how those syllable types work together to make bigger words.
