Learners will gain confidence in core areas of science and build a foundation in several scientific disciplines. Learners will have a chance to discover and discuss what they learn and see real-world examples of the science we are learning about.
Ms. Brenda loves science and enjoys learning about science for fun. She studied Geology at Mesa Community College, received certificates in Anatomy and Physiology at Southwest Institute of Healing Arts, completed an Astronomy and Cosmology course on Khan Academy, and is currently working her way through a Physics course on Khan Academy.

In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
In class, we will use various websites to learn more about our study topics. Week 3 we will using pages on the Arizona State University "Ask a Biologist" website to explore the bones of the human body. One page allows us to 'x-ray' a human body and the other allows us to do a simulated 'dissection' on a human bone. Week 13 we will be using a page on the NASA website to look at the layers of our atmosphere and get an idea of their scale. Some weeks I will screen-share pictures and models of the universe. During weeks 17 and 18 I may show video's from Khan Academy to help illustrate scale on a universal level. Students will no be required to create accounts for any of the websites we visit.

At times, we may discuss evolution or the origin of the universe (big bang theory). We will not be discussing evolution at length. If you have any questions you may contact me directly. Outschool is a secular platform so any alternatives to evolution will need to be discussed outside of class amongst learners and their families.

We will be using scissors and measuring tape at various times in class. If you feel your learner can not safely use these tools, please refer to the class schedule to make sure an adult helper is available during those class periods.

Science can be messy. Please review the supply list to be sure your learner has appropriate knowledge, clothing, and space for the week's activities.
