Welcome to the Feminist History Lesson mini-lesson series! These short, 20 minute lessons are designed to teach students a brief history lesson about an important event in feminist history. Each lesson is accompanied by an optional after-class activity that students can complete with an adult's help. This lesson is about Susanna Salter, America's first female mayor! Susanna Salter was elected mayor of Argonia, Kansas in 1887, which was the first year that women had the right to vote in local elections in Kansas, and more than 30 years before suffragists won a major victory for women in 1920. But Salter was not a politician by nature, and it turns out that her election was the result of a prank! In this short class, students will learn about Salter's life, how she came to be mayor, and why her election was newsworthy. After class, students will be provided with a reflection worksheet that they can complete with a grown-up. (Independent learners and readers may be able to complete the activity on their own.) This series is fast paced and energetic! Students will have the chance to answer questions in order to connect their own experiences to the topic, and they will also be able to ask questions about the subject of the lesson. All of my classes are taught from an intersectional feminist perspective, which means that I affirm and support transgender and nonbinary students, I believe that Black Lives Matter, I am LGBTQ+ inclusive, and I am inclusive and affirming of students' diverse experiences, including those related to race, gender, ethnicity, religion, orientation, ability or disability, neurodiversity, and more. Pick and choose from all of my 20-Minute Feminist History lessons to learn about the feminist icons that interest you most!

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been an English professor for 10+ years, which involves teaching through a feminist lens. My terminal degree, an MFA in Creative Nonfiction, focused on feminist narratives. In addition, my undergraduate degree in English with a minor in History prepared me for a career as a feminist educator. At the collegiate level, I teach education majors how to address diversity issues in their classroom in a class called Teaching Diversity Through Young Adult Literature. My essays on feminism and pop culture have been published by Jezebel, Everyday Feminism, Role Reboot, and Salon. I have also been teaching feminism courses on Outschool since early 2020.
