Description

Class Experience

This class is taught in English.
Pacing and learning goals vary by student based on experience as well as natural ability. Lesson packages are available to purchase 4 weeks at a time, so learners can go as far, as fast as they want!

In terms of songwriting and piano skills, here is what the average learner should expect to learn in the first 6 months of lessons(piano skills in parentheses.)

Weeks 1-4: Build your first full song melody. (Piano fundamentals and the C Major Scale)
Weeks 5-8: Create chords for your first song. (Play basic three-note chords in C Major.)
Weeks 9-12: Create your first song concept. (Play "radio friendly" three-note chord progressions in C Major.)
Weeks 13-16: Lyric writing fundamentals. (Play common chord progressions in C Major.)
Weeks 17-20: Write the lyrics for your first song. (Play basic left-hand bass patterns in C Major)
Weeks 21-24: Create an entire song start to finish. (Play basic three-note chords in all keys.)

In terms of ear training and sheet music, students can typically do the following after 6 months of Piano & Songwriting Lessons:

1) Ear Training: Identify the sound of any white key in the C Major Scale before playing it.
2) Sheet Music: Read and write simple songs in the key of C Major.
I have a Bachelor's of Science in Music, over 30 yeas of experience playing piano, and over 20 years of experience songwriting. My music has been featured in television and live stage productions, I've taught elementary, middle, and high school students as a piano instructor and music teacher. I've also taught adults as a songwriting coach.
There will be weekly assignments. Homework takes from 15-20 minutes of daily practice, five days per week. Each assignment will have some combination of piano drills, ear training exercises, and/or songs to practice daily, as well as one-time songwriting assignments that can be completed in one sitting in about 15 minutes.
1) Piano or Keyboard with full-sized keys. (Preferably 88 keys. Minimum 60 keys.)

2) Piano Books (Recommended during lessons based on the skill-level of the student. Each book is under $10 and available to order online. We only use one piano book at a time for at least 12 weeks.)

3) Student notebook for taking notes and writing down your awesome song ideas!
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
No formal assessment is done for this course. However, weekly feedback on assignments is given in lessons.
30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
While I try to ensure that members of all faith backgrounds are comfortable in my Piano & Songwriting Lessons, I do use secular songs to show songwriting techniques. However, I always choose songs that are clean, and I only use the parts of those songs that are appropriate for all ages. Some song examples are love songs, but never include any content that is explicitly sexual in nature. If students are interested in hearing more of the song examples that I use outside of class, I do encourage parents to look up the lyrics and ensure that they are acceptable by their standards.

Also, Noteflight.com is an external resource used in the course that students can use to create sheet music for their songs. You can create a free account on their website, and instruction for how to use it will be provided within class via screen share. See the external resource section for the link.
