Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
In this one-time, one-on-one class, the student will learn and practice two strategies for dividing a multi-digit number by a single-digit number—the “Big 7” method and the place value chart. Unlike the standard “long division” algorithm that relies on repeating a series of memorized steps, the “Big 7” method and place value chart are based on conceptual understanding. These strategies make sense to kids and help them develop the greatest gift any math student can possess—strong number sense. We will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each method so that the student can choose the one that works best for them. Many times children experience difficulty in math because they are presented with strategies that they are expected to use, even when they don’t understand exactly how and why these strategies work. Children become far more confident, enthusiastic, and proficient when they are encouraged to find meaning in their math and use strategies that make sense. As we practice these strategies, I will share useful tips and suggestions and encourage a positive view of math.

I am a National Board Certified elementary school teacher, and I have taught math every year of my 28-year career. I have been thoroughly trained in the Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI) approach to mathematics. It's very important to me that my students make sense of their mathematics, develop strong conceptual understanding, build a solid foundation of skills, enjoy their math, gain confidence, and find the subject interesting, engaging, and meaningful.
