Beginner Level
First grade Science is very interesting and fun for students! This semester class will include a mixture of S.T.E.M., Life Science, Earth Science, and Physical Science. We will even learn about people and careers in Science! I have acquired permission from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt to use Science Fusion, Grade 1, for use in my online Outschool class. The ISBN # is 978-0-544-77837-5 (2017). I have it divided into four parts to make it more affordable for families to pay as we go. Each part lasts four weeks each. (Units 1, 2, & 3) Part 2: 1st Grade Science Fusion: Semester Class - Life Science (Units 3 continued, 4, & 5) Part 3: 1st Grade Science Fusion: Semester Class - Earth Science (Units 6, 7, & 8) Part 4: 1st Grade Science Fusion: Semester Class - Physical Science (Units 9 & 10) Part 1: 1st Grade Science Fusion: Semester Class - The Nature of Science & S.T.E.M. (Units 1, 2, & 3) Week 1: Unit 1: How Scientists Work Class 1 - Our Five Senses (pages 1-16) - Discuss the Table of Contents. - Learning with our senses - *Activity - Tasting: sweet, sour, salty (Students will be supplied with a handout to print. Please bring something sweet, sour, and salty to class.) - Science tools we can use for measuring: ruler, tape measure, balance, measuring cup, thermometer (Please bring any of these that you have at home.) Homework: *Please complete pages 12 & 13. Class 3 - Review Week 2: Class 1 - Investigation Practice (pages 29-44) - Make a hypothesis and plan about colors. - *Activity - Mix paint colors. (Students will be supplied a handout to print. Parents, please supervise your children while they are painting.) - Learn about Mary Anderson: inventor of windshield wiper Class 2 - Unit 2: Technology All Around Us (pages 45-60) - How Do Engineers Work? - Five Step Design Process to solve problems - Worksheet - Engineers and other jobs (Students will be supplied a handout to print.) - *Activity - Share an invention in your house that helps you do something. (toothbrush, hairbrush, pencil) Class 3 - Review Week 3: Class 1 - Material Parts - Picture Walk - From Steel to Bicycle, By: Robin Nelson - Bicycle Parts, Read: Sports For Sprouts: Bicycle Riding, By: Tracy Nelson Maurer - *Activity - Show Bicycle Parts in Bicycle Book, By: Gail Gibbons and sketch a bicycle or label the parts on pages 62-63 Class 2 - Natural vs. Human-Made materials - Show students the "Blue Jeans Map" on pages 30-31 in Blue Jeans Before the Store, By: Jody Jensen - *Activity - Make a Materials Chart: toy dinosaur, scissors, socks - Learn about Dr. Eugene Tssui: architect on pages 75-76 Students may use coins, blocks, or playdough to build a building inspired by the book Wacky World of: Baffling Buildings!, by: Hermione Redshaw. The teacher will screen-share the book from Epic. Class 3 - Review Week 4: Class 1 - Animals - Living vs. Non-living things - Animal Needs and People Needs - Caring for Pets - *Activity - Make a "Needs" Venn Diagram: Animal vs. People Needs Class 2 - Animal Groups - Mammals, Birds, Reptiles, Amphibians, Fish, Insects - *Activity - Make a chart "How Animals Move" Class 3- Review
