In this comprehensive English Language Arts class, we'll have fun with: *weekly weather and calendar time *vowels and consonant sounds *grammar (parts of speech) *writing skills *sight words *reading comprehension *handwriting *storytime *arts and drawing *show and tell Each week I will introduce letter sounds (consonants and vowels) and words from the 1st-Grade Dolch Sight Words list and we’ll use flashcards and games for extra practice. We will review at least one new sight word per week. We’ll learn grammar skills such as punctuation, capitalization, word order, and parts of speech, and we’ll copy words and sentences for handwriting practice. I’ll read short passages and check for comprehension. We'll also discuss calendar days, months, and upcoming holidays during our greeting time. I know young children need movement, even during the first grade, so we'll get our wiggles out with movement and song. I'll be sure to keep your children busy with movement throughout our time together! I love engaging students in song, so many times I will introduce new children's folk songs or rhymes. I also use props (poster board, felt board, and other visuals) during stories and change my voice for extra effect! (On occasion, there may be a special puppet appearance!) Each week we read stories and learn about the world around us. I’ll provide ice-breakers and sometimes we’ll learn fun science facts. Learners will interact with me and with each other by sharing artwork they’ve created, participating in group discussions with my slides and video clips, dancing together with music, and playing games together. Some weeks we'll work on an art project (drawing and coloring), and other weeks we'll have Show-and-Tell. My teaching style is very interactive. I like to help children truly learn with their whole bodies and I teach to all learning styles (kinesthetic, auditory, visual, linguistic, social, solitary, and logical). I use techniques such as call and response, singing, chants, flashcards, picture visuals, and video presentations. I call on each child individually, and if they are shy at first I allow them time to warm up and feel comfortable. Children are encouraged to interact with their classmates and participate positively during our time together. We will meet weekly by video (with the exception of some holidays). You'll never know if I might sing a song or break out my puppets! Come join in the fun! (If your learner is not quite ready for grammar and writing skills, you may enroll in my Kindergarten class instead, found here): https://outschool.com/classes/kindergarten-circle-time-and-reading-readiness-with-mrs-dee-lhPl22zB#usmyyoodw5
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Our music and movement time is typically very low-key and lasts only a few minutes, but please remain close by students during this time to properly supervise them. Be sure they are wearing proper footwear and have an open workspace (devoid of tripping hazards) so that they can follow along with our movements. We will likely stretch ahead of time.
