Class Experience

US Grade 1
Beginner Level
1st Grade Q4 Leveled Reading is for learners to focus on beginner 1st grade leveled books at an I level to help them work on natural reading skills and prep them for 2nd grade reading.

Classes are live with a teacher and interactive using the Nearpod app!

Each lesson will focus on getting through one book at an I level. According to U.S. standards, I leveled readers are considered the 4th quarter of a 1st grade reading level.

When we work with beginner readers, it can be quite difficult to find properly scored books for them. Children's books are not written at a child's reading level.

I N T H I S C O U R S E:
We will read two books each lesson:

Levels:
✅I Level = 1st Grade Quarter 4

We will practice:
✅Fluency
✅Vocabulary
✅Sight Words
✅High Frequency Words
✅Using Context + Phonics Skills to Identify New Words
✅Comprehension Practice

This course does not focus primarily on phonics. If your child struggles with blends using digraphs, long vowel sounds, r-controlled sounds, and suffixes such as /-ed/ and /-ing/, they should start with Shields Scholars' "Reading Can Be Puzzling: 1st Grade" course and enroll into this course once they're comfortable with 1st grade level phonics.

T E A C H I N G S T Y L E:

⭐Our teaching style at Shields Scholars is light-hearted and fun.
⭐We use Nearpod for this course, which is an interactive app for the lesson content.
This way, kids not only learn via visual and auditory learning, they get to learn kinesthetically as well since they are physically involved in the lesson with simple games such as matching, drawing, memory tests, drag & drop features, and everyone's favorite - Time to Climb. Time to Climb is an interactive quiz where each child chooses a character for the game and as they answer questions correctly, their character races other students to the top of a mountain. First one to the top wins.
⭐You can find a parent demo Nearpod lesson below under the "Materials" section to use for free to see if this would be something your child would like.

R E A D I N G A S S E S S M E N T S:

If you do not know your child's current reading level, you can schedule a 1:1 reading assessment with Ms. Cassie here:
