Class Experience

US Grade 1
Intermediate Level
This is an ongoing class that incorporates songs/movement; anchor charts; teacher modeling/directing; strong student engagement/participation; and visual, auditory, and kinesthetic modalities – including Phonics Dance* - to strengthen the learning process. “Chunking” is a decoding strategy that teaches and trains the eye to recognize letter combinations in words, rather than letter-by-letter. When learners become confident in these word chunks, you will see improvement in phonemic awareness, which will directly affect reading fluency, accuracy, and writing development.
*used with permission by Ginny Dowd (creator of Phonics Dance)

Here is what you can expect during each meeting:
Review (quick review of previous patterns)
Pattern Introduction (learners will be exposed to 10-12 words containing the weekly patterns)
Phonics Dance (we will put movement and rhyme to each phonics pattern)
Tap it Out (we will tap out parts and decode the word together)
Word Detective (we will identify words within a sentence with the patterns of the week)
Catch-and-Spell (we will encode several words with the weekly pattern)
Word Sort (we will create a word sort with each pattern, and use pictures to determine the correct word)
*Fix the Sentence, if time (we will read a sentence together and correct the mistakes)

Hi...I’m Kristin! I have been in education for the past 25 years, ranging from early childhood through upper elementary school! My Bachelor’s Degree is in Child Development, with a minor in Music; and I hold a Master’s Degree/Teaching Credential in Cross-Cultural Teaching. At this point in my career, I have worked as a lead elementary school teacher in both fourth and first grades, training and leading a team of teachers in creating engaging, developmentally-appropriate curriculum utilizing active learning strategies and differentiated instruction to meet the needs of our diverse learning community. I also function as a mentor to new teachers, and often present on innovative teaching strategies, including promoting student engagement within the classroom through incorporating the Multiple Intelligences, helping to create a growth mindset, and establishing positive and trusting classroom management strategies.

English/Language Arts is my absolute favorite subject to teach, and I love incorporating phonics and writing strategies! Within early elementary school, there is such a range in students’ feelings/abilities, and small groups offer the perfect opportunity to develop the reluctant learner, and also to challenge the learner who is looking for deeper enrichment opportunities! I look forward to helping your learner grow and succeed in their writing abilities!
