As a first-grade math teacher, I am SO excited to be sharing this class with you and your learner. We are going to have so much fun solving real-world problems through hands-on, interactive learning. Students will be solving daily Common Core-aligned instruction focused on developing an understanding of whole number relationships and place value, including grouping in tens and ones. We will focus on addition and subtraction number story word problems, as well as an introduction to multiplication and division using addition and subtraction. I will incorporate students/ names, their favorite characters and anything else they enjoy into the lessons to keep them excited and engaged about learning. If there is a specific math skill you would like your student to practice, please let me know ahead of time so I can prepare accordingly and effectively accommodate each child. Lessons will begin with me reviewing the problem of the day to the students and dissecting it to make sure we understand what the problem is asking us and how we will be able to solve it. We will emphasize creating a plan or road map in our brain before getting started. I may model a similar problem for students and then we will discuss together and learn from my strategies. Students will then have the opportunity to complete their problem independently and we will come back together to reveal how each student solved for their answer. The goal is for students to learn from each others' strategies and continue to advance their learning. I recommend that students use math manipulatives such as Unifix cubes (linked below) to better visualize the numbers and solve fun, engaging word problems! This is not mandatory, but I do find they are very helpful for students. Additionally, if your student is not technically in first grade but you believe they would benefit from this class, no problem! I am happy to accommodate and differentiate for each learner.
