Class Experience

Use the common core to soar! In this ongoing course, learners will complete spiral activities of 1st grade grammar, vocabulary, reading & writing (aligned to Common Core) each week. A "spiral activity" means that the standards covered in each class remain the same, but the questions change. There will be high engagement and participation and NO boredom! Your learner will look forward to class each week! Your learner will become successful by both answering questions correctly and by making mistakes. Sometimes, we learn the most when we make a mistake! This is a safe environment where your learner is not expected to have the right answer all the time! The class size will be kept small (up to 6 students) in order to ensure every learner understands the material. Each class will be guided by the teacher, but learners are also expected to write down and show their work in their own writing notebooks or journals.

Learning Goals

Learner will focus on the following:
Conventions of Standard English

• Capitalize “1st word” and the pronoun “I”.
• Use Question words.
• Capitalize “names of people” and “dates”.
Vocabulary Acquisition

• Sort objects into categories.
• Sort words into categories.
• Use context clues to determine meaning.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello parents! My name is Andrea Schmitz and I am SO excited to meet your learners. I work full time as a speech language pathologist (SLP) in an elementary school in FL. I have been working with children since high school but have been professionally working with children as a SLP for over 11 years now! I love helping children find their voice and learn new sounds, words and concepts. It brings me joy when they succeed at using BIG sentences to express their wants, thoughts, and needs! I earned my Master's degree in Speech Language Pathology from The George Washington University in 2007 and my Bachelor's degree in Communication Disorders from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, OH (about 45 minutes from where I grew up).

In my classes, your learner will be having so much fun that they will not even realize they are learning! I focus on learning through play while having fun. I encourage a lot of engagement and participation between myself and the learners as well as learner to learner.

If you ever have any questions or ideas for future classes, do not hesitate to reach out to me. Be sure to follow me in order to stay up to date on my class listings and schedule. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with your learner and I cannot wait to meet you in class!
