US Grade Kindergarten - 1
This class is student-driven and extremely effective for learning reading comprehension skills. This class is suitable for students who read at a 1st grade level (Guided Reading levels F, G, H). If you are not sure of your child's Guided Reading level, please let me know and I can send you a sample text(s) of what we will be reading in class. During each class a fictional text is divided up into logical chunks (a couple of paragraphs or a page, depending upon how dense the text is). We start the class by thinking about the title and picture on the cover of the day's story, and make a prediction about what might happen. We review story elements- characters, setting, problem and solution. Then, students take turns reading sections of text until the entire text has been read and discussed. While reading, decoding strategies and grammar rules are pointed out, as well as definitions of new vocabulary. Week 1: Bonk's Bad Dream Week 2: Brainstorm Bear Week 3: The Last Piece of Cake Week 4: Zots Helps Out Week 5: Gordon Finds His Way Week 6: A Dog for Sally Week 7: Best of Friends Week 8: Bake Sale Week 9: Josh Gets Glasses Week 10: The Loose Tooth Week 11: Carlos Joins the Team Week 12: Laws for Kids Week 13: Zots Learns to Share Week 14: The Elves and the Shoemaker Week 15: Brother Messy, Brother Neat Week 16: The Little Red Hen/ The Magic Bike Week 17: The Sleepover Week 18: Eat Like A Pig Week 19: Jack and the Beanstalk Week 20: Safari Week 21: Billy Goats Gruff Week 22: Run! Week 23: The Day I needed Help Week 24: Miles the Nile Crocodile Week 25: Katie Rides Her Bike Week 26: Katie's Big Change Week 27: Alistair's Night Week 28: Stella Storyteller Week 29: Our Camping Trip Week 30: Lou's Flu Week 31: We Do Yoga
Learning Goals
Students will develop good reading habits, such as making predictions, thinking about characters and their feelings, and summarizing texts in their own words.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Master's Degree in Behavioral Science from Northwestern University
I love teaching reading and writing skills at the primary level! As a result, I have delved into the research about best practices of instruction, and I began my own afterschool literacy program for children called Whiz Kids International. I have a bachelor’s degree in French, a credential to teach English as a foreign language from Georgetown University, and a master’s degree from the School of Education at Northwestern University. I was a kindergarten and first grade teacher in an international primary school and have more than 15 years of teaching experience. I am passionate about encouraging and supporting children to believe in their abilities and reach their full potential!
