We will decode (break up words) and encode (spell words) using developmentally-appropriate chunking strategies. In each meeting, be sure to send your child with a white board or paper+ pencil. We go bananas learning to work with words.

Description

Class Experience

Every class we start with us talking about and playing with the guiding theme, the Chunky Monkey Reading Strategy, 
which says : words in English can be broken down into chunks to read them and can be built up with chunks  to write them. 
Then we collectively analyze and sort a variety of short, medium and long words to see if we can find chunks (like -og in fog and dog,        
 -amp in camp and lamp, fire in firefly and firefighter). 

We spend most of the class working as a group sorting...

Learners can learn and apply the Chunky Monkey chunking strategy for analyzing words in order to improve awareness for decoding and encoding (two main standards in the Common Core State Standards).

Optional: Practice building more words with the chunks used in prior class.

Pen and pencil or white board and marker required in every class

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

At the end of the six weeks, I will share brief feedback on your child's performance and 1-2 continuing goals for at-home practice.

1 hour per week in class, and no time outside of class.
