This is a four week course, that examines the actions of a 22 year old George Washington in his first encounters with battle as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Virginia Colonial Militia. In his first leadership role for the British and Virginia in the Ohio Territory in 1754, Washington’s decisions and actions and the struggles of those around him are detailed as he commands the Virginia Militia into the Ohio wilderness. The class will examine and analyze a young George Washington and his controversial and influential leadership in the Battle of Jumonville Glen and the battle, one month later, of Ft. Necessity. It is these two battles that usher in the French and Indian War and the birth of a New Nation. The class will meet once per week for four weeks utilizing a Power Point presentation that includes photographs of Jumonville Glen, the Reconstructed Ft. Necessity and the Great Meadows as they look today. In class is a lecture,discussive class based around power point presentations.The student will learn about: George Washington's early years, Christopher Gist and Gist’s Plantation, the Ohio Territory, the Forks of the Ohio, Ft. Du Quesne, Jumonville's March, Tanaghrisson the Half King (Mingo) and his influence and role in the Ohio Territory, Jumonville Glen, the Great Meadows and Ft. Necessity, the Battle of Ft. Necessity and it's aftermath. Join this class that explores both the British, Colonial Virginian and the French perspectives of the Battles. Learn the real story of a young George Washington in great detail and what he and the others around him experienced as they created their places in the early history of the United States. Week One - George Washington's Birth, his family and the world he was born into. British Rule and the Colonies. Week Two - The French and British Struggle for the Ohio Territory. Colonial Virginia, The Ohio Company, Fur Trade. Who is Christopher Gist? Week Three - The Battle of Jumonville Glen. What was Washington's Role. Who is Tannagisson (Mingo) and his role in the battles and in support of Washington, the British and Colonial Virginia. Week Four - The Battle of Ft. Necessity. The result and how it leads to the French and Indian War, the Revolutionary War and the Birth of a Nation.
Learning Goals
Student will get a better understanding of who George Washington was and some of the influences that led to him becoming the first US President. They will learn about the Ohio Territory in the mid-late 1700's, the Battles of Jumonville Glen and Ft. Necessity, as well as the events leading up to the French and Indian War and the Birth of the New Nation, from the French, the British, Colonial Virginian and the Native American points of View.

Parental Guidance
The class does examine and explore the details of war or battles between Native American's, the French and the British in the 1700's. It can be graphic in description at times, but the reality is part of the history and in the details of the events in history.
