Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 4
I have 18 years of elementary education. My favorite subject to teach is reading. I love to watch students grow from unsure, hesitant readers, to kids who love to read! When working on a students' reading skills the student needs to have a solid reading foundation in phonemic awareness, phonics, rhyming, and sight words not only so their fluency skills improve but their comprehension and spelling shows improvement too.
In this class we will be focusing on phonics instruction, sight words, spelling, and fluency. As a child moves out of basic reading skills we move into focusing on fluency, comprehension, and responses to literature. In the first class, I will assess your child to put them at the level they need to be at. We will then work on phonics, sight words, and fluency. As we move through lessons I will be monitoring the progress to ensure your child is mastering the skills being taught. I will also periodically assess your child so I know if they are ready to move on or if we need to continue working on a specific skill longer. Once your child begins to read fluently we will also start working on comprehension. We will be reading books that are specific to the phonics that we work on in the classroom. I will give students a list of sight words and reading material to practice between classes to help them master the concepts that we work in during class. As your child moves from basic reading to reading comprehension we will work on reading short stories and eventually move into reading chapter books. We will use a variety of questioning and answering skills to work on higher level thinking questions as well as written response. For more advanced readers we will begin novel studies and work on comprehension and vocabulary. We will us different reading activities with Nearpod and grow writing skill with using the reader response questions, flip grid, nearpod and discussion boards.
I look forward to helping your child grow and learn as a reader in the ultimate goal of helping students want to become life long learners.

Hi I have been teaching elementary school for 20 years. I have a love for teaching and my goal is to help students love to read and learn. Teaching kids to read if my favorite thing to do and I love watching kids go from beginning readers to fluent readers who don't want to put a book down.
I pride myself in helping scholars learn to have a growth mindset. Once scholars realize that mistakes are magical they will be more willing to try and learn from the mistakes they make.
I have 2 of my own boys, ages 10 and 12. We love to play with our animals and pretty much anything outside.
