Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 4
Welcome! I created this course for students who are homeschooled or a part of a school that does not offer elementary music education. As a prior elementary experience who has taught for 5 years in the Florida public schools, in addition to teaching piano and voice privately for over 10 years, my desire in this course is to help lay a music foundation for children ages 7-10. So the topics covered in this course will align with the National Common Core Music Standards for grade levels 2nd-4th grade. Topics are all listed in the syllabus section of this course.

Class Structure:
Each class will include an interactive lecture, some discussion prompts, and "practice & play" time. We will use powerpoint and slides created by me, in addition to music and videos created by either myself, or other music educators I will credit or whom are on Kids YouTube.

After each class students will be will have a weekly homework assignment. There will always be embedded and approved Youtube videos within the classroom that will be displayed for them to practice along with, and they will not need to link to Youtube to use these. Additionally, most weeks there will be a worksheet to do, or a diagram to look through, alongside of a question or two to respond to. If the student does not have access to a printer to print and write on worksheets, there will be a second option provided that they can use or do for extra practice.

Time Commitment:
Each class is 30 minutes, and students will be introduced to the topic and given some time to practice as a group. About 30 minutes of homework will be assigned each week. However, any student particularly interested in a topic is welcome to write at anytime and ask for more information, resources, videos, or worksheets on any given topic they are wanting to learn more about.

At the end of the course each student will have a final project, a performance of some sort that they will showcase.

If a student misses a class, they will be able to review the class lesson video and then completed the weekly homework assignment in the assignments section whenever they have time, even if it is late.

Please feel free to write me with any questions you have. - Mrs. Martin

Pre-Requisites
Students should be able to read at the 1st grade level to participate in this class.
Supply List
Students will need access to a hand free device with good internet connection. If using an IPAD they will need to have it set up stationary so they can move and clap freely. I do not recommend logging in via phone as it will make it much more difficulty to see the teacher, other classmates, slides, and videos.

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Bachelor's Degree in Music from Mount Vernon Nazarene University
*As a Florida FES-UA/EO and Step Up PEP eligible music elective teacher, my courses are reimbursable for those seeking to utilize their funds for a Florida State approved music elective.*

I am a certified voice and music teacher with a bachelor's degree in music who has been singing (professionally) for nearly 25 years, and teaching music and voice for over 15 years.

It all started at the age of 13 when I began training in the Bel Canto method with Louise Savage, the founder of the Fine Arts Association school in Willoughby Ohio. I studied with her weekly for five full years, during which I recorded 3 CDs and began to sing publicly for several professional and regional events, choirs, and programs. This was the beginning of my musical career.

Since that time, I have continued diverse vocal training with multiple amazing vocal coaches, have had the opportunity to sing in several professional choirs, musical theater productions, and special events in multiple states across the US and have earned a bachelor’s degree in music, with a focus in voice.

Alongside of holding a degree in music, I have also received the Voice Teacher Certification from New York Vocal Coaching after training 50 hours with renowned founder Justin Stoney.

I have worked as a Florida public school music teacher for 5 years at the elementary and middle school levels, and have been teaching piano and voice privately for over 15 years while also performing at a professional level within the state. I have been asked to sing the National Anthem 3 times at the Tampa Bay Ray's stadium for a MLB game, have been in productions at both Manatee and Sarasota Players Theaters, performed with the Children's Theater of Michigan, was a member of Sarasota's professional Choral Artists for 10 concerts, and in 2021 sang in several Epcot's Candlelight Processional shows at Walt Disney World.

In addition to those solo endeavors, my husband and I, known as "The Martin Duo" have sung for restaurants, theaters, weddings, and exclusive community yacht and country club events. We are most well-known for our Musical Theater and Show-tune tribute shows alongside of being popular Christmas Carolers throughout the state. We also work as voice-over artists for Worldbook where we can be heard voicing several characters for children's graphic novel audiobooks.

Currently I also work part-time as a voice and piano instructor at one of Nord Angelia's international school campuses.
