Classes will be primarily lecture with examples of problems, discussion, and opportunities for students to solve problems in classes. Following class, slides, graphic organizers, and charts from the lesson will be posted to the classroom for student review and use. Where appropriate, problems will consist of a mix of equations and word problems. We will focus on the following topics: Week 1 Solving Systems by Substitution and Elimination (This topic will be reviewed at the beginning of Algebra 1B.) Week 2 Linear Inequalities - We'll learn to solve linear inequalities. Week 3 Properties of Exponents - We'll learn to use exponents in addition, subtraction, multiplying, and dividing with variables. Week 4 Exponential Functions - We'll learn to solve and graph basic exponential functions. Week 5 Operations with Polynomials - We'll learn to work with polynomials. Week 6 Factoring Trinomials - We'll learn to use factoring with trinomials. Week 7 Simplifying Radicals - We'll learn the basics of simplifying radicals. Week 8 The Pythagorean Theorem - We'll learn to use the Pythagorean Theorem to solve problems. Week 9 Quadratic Equations: Factoring - We'll use factoring to solve quadratic equations. Week 10 Quadratic Equations: Completing the Square - We'll complete the square to solve quadratic equations. Week 11 Quadratic Equations: Quadratic Formula - We'll learn about the quadratic formula for solving quadratic equations when other options won't work. Week 12 Distance and Mid-point Formulas - We'll learn about the distance an mid-point formulas for problem-solving. Week 13 Rational Expressions and Functions - We'll learn the basics of rational expressions and functions. Week 14 Inverse Variation - We'll learn the basics of inverse variation. Classes will consist of a mixture of lecture, examples, and opportunities for students to try their hands at solving problems. Homework will be posted after most classes so students can review or attempt problems similar to what we covered in class. Teacher expertise and credentials
I'm a former middle and high school teacher of math and English with 15 years of experience teaching both in person and online.
I love making topics like math and writing less scary and more fun for students. I've found that algebra is less intimidating when students have a good foundation in the basics, but that sometimes worrying about "the right way" can limit understanding. Similarly, I've found that worrying about perfection can make writing harder, especially when one of the first rules is: Writing is rewriting.
When not teaching or writing, I love reading good books, practicing martial arts, and spending time with my family which includes six cats and two ducks.
