Personalized feedback will be provided to every learner as we work through the writing process to publish our paragraphs. Feedback will be provided during class and after class when the final copy of the work is submitted.Class Experience
US Grade 3 - 5
There are 3 units of writing that will be covered in this class. We will write two narratives, three opinion pieces, and three informative/explanatory pieces. Learners will publish 8 pieces of writing. Learners will submit their writing to the teacher after each class for personalized feedback. πLeaves of Learning Academy is rated "Popular" by Outschool because we are in the top 10% of all teachers on Outschool. This means we offer classes that are in high demand that fill up quickly! π Each lesson includes: -a mini-lesson/instruction -studying and analyzing a model of that type of writing (mentor text) -crafting our written piece -revising and editing activities -feedback -publishing activities Lessons 1-4: Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences. π―Focus: Elements of Narrative Writing (beginning, middle, end; characters, setting, plot; problem/solution; dialogue) πMini-Lesson: Choose specific, powerful adjectives and verbs; Use a hook in the introduction; writing about 'small moments' β Skills: Correctly use quotation marks and commas in dialogue πPublish: Two narrative pieces Lessons 5-8: Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly. π―Focus: Elements of Informative/Explanatory Writing (main idea with supporting relevant details; topic and concluding sentences) πMini-Lesson: Choosing relevant supporting details/information; crafting a strong topic sentence and concluding sentence β Skills: Find and correct sentence fragments and run-ons; correct capitalization and punctuation; proper nouns; crafting complex sentences πPublish: Three informative/explanatory pieces Lessons 9-12: Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and information. π―Focus: Elements of Opinion Paragraphs (supporting an opinion with details; focus on one topic) πMini-Lesson: Make a claim and support with details/information; crafting a strong topic sentence and concluding sentence; organizing details β Skills: Organize ideas, add opinions, using helping verbs and plural nouns πPublish: Three opinion pieces We also offer this class for 4th and 5th graders to build off of the skills learned in this class: https://outschool.com/classes/writing-workshop-4th-5th-grades-W0iCBU22?usid=OpnolQ0w&signup=true&utm_campaign=share_activity_link ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *Leaves of Learning Academy is an organization on Outschool with about 18 teachers. Occasionally, the teacher for this class may not be able to teach and a substitute teacher from the organization will take her place. Only teachers trained to teach this class will serve as a possible substitute for the class. A message will be posted in the Outschool classroom before the class takes place in the event a substitute will be teaching. I am happy to offer a refund to any learner who prefers not to attend the class with a substitute. Please send a message through Outschool in that event and I will issue a refund. This is considered a missed meeting and you are not entitled to a refund. β Refunds are not guaranteed in the event that your learner misses a past or future class meeting due to a schedule conflict, and will depend on the class-specific refund policy. β If your learnerβs meeting time changes because of daylight saving time starting or ending for several world regions, you are not entitled to a refund if theyβre unable to attend. Please review your learnerβs schedule ahead of time to ensure you know when classes are meeting.
