This fun class teaches students how to make and use 12 survival tools from easy household objects. In the class I will demonstrate how to make or use the following survival "tools." 1. Egg Carton Fire-starter 2. Dorito Fire starter 3. Terra Cotta Heater 4. Plastic Bottle Fish Trap 5. Opening a Can Without a Can Opener 6. T-shirt Water Filter 7. Clothes Insulator 8. Gallon Jug Desk Lamp 9. Soda can tab fish hooks 10. 2 liter bottle rain collector 11. Mylar Blanket Emergency Lens 12. Duct tape Snow Goggles With the use of Power Point slides, pictures, videos and live demonstrations, the above survival hacks will be explained and/or created. Students are welcome to make as many of the hacks as they wish in class- with the exception of the fire starters. These can be practiced with a parent or other responsible adult outside of class. A list of materials will be provided. Most of the materials can be found around the home. At the end of class, students can share other survival hacks that they are familiar with, Questions and discussion from students will be encouraged. No previous knowledge of the subject matter is required. My classes are very relaxed and a great place for learners to engage and discuss interesting ideas and topics related to camping, hiking and survival.
Learning Goals
Students will learn about 12 different survival tools that can be made with natural materials or from every day items found in most households.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Using different materials to start a fire will be demonstrated by either a short video clip or live demonstration. However, I will not ask the students to do this on their own.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Hello! My name is Beth Price and I am a certified teacher for grades Kindergarten through 3rd. I have taught students for over 20 years in a preschool setting, Kindergarten, 1st grade and online ESL classes. I have also home-schooled two of my children in their middle school and high school years.
I enjoy teaching all subjects but my passion is teaching Language Arts, Social Studies and Science. I believe that students learn best when they are actively engaged in a lesson--moving, singing, and participating!
I live in Tennessee with my husband and 2 dogs, and enjoy reading, sewing, gardening and spending time with my children and grandchildren.
