Class experience
US Grade 4 - 7
I am ready and willing to help your learner. My tutoring class is an ongoing class so that students can easily sign up to meet consistently or pop in when they need extra support. You can email me ahead of class to alert me to specific writing questions/needs, or we can start with the introductory paragraph and work our way through the entire essay writing process. Questions we answer during class: - How do writers connect multiple paragraphs to build an essay? - Why is the 5-paragraph...
This class is taught in English.
All students will improve their understanding of the writing process and, ultimately, how to build an essay.
About Me Hello! My name is Melanie Howell, and I have been an independent school teacher for more than twenty-five years. Nearly 30 years of classroom experience taught me that real learning- the kind that makes its way into long-term memory- only happens when there is mutual trust and respect between teacher and student. My central objective is to maximize each student's potential and encourage students to embrace and take ownership of their learning. I am the author of Will's Ride, a lovely picture book about a boy and his adaptive bike. I enjoy hosting a Facebook page for teachers called Teaching Matters and a Youtube channel called The Teacher's Playbook. Creating a dynamic learning environment where students feel safe and supported is the first essential element to my teaching style. I meet each student at their level, providing academic support, redirection, and genuine praise. Classroom Policies: Students are required to have working cameras and microphones in class positioned such that students and teacher can both see and hear each other clearly for the entirety of the class. Collaboration makes the class more engaging and fun. Last-minute signups are common; I try not to cancel. After ten minutes, if no student has arrived in the virtual classroom, I will exit the classroom. In some cases, rescheduling is possible. Refunds are generally not offered for missed classes. I have Orton-Gillingham training and HillRAP training in reading and writing instruction. My most recent experience includes teaching a novel-based approach to literature, creative writing, essay writing, vocabulary instruction, and study skills. In addition to teaching, I have served as a school administrator, on the curriculum/academic team, and as co-chair of my school's re-accreditation process. I love working with students to develop an appreciation for language and literature. My central objective is to encourage students to embrace and take ownership of their learning. Teaching students to "read like a writer" is one way to achieve this goal.
