Description

Class Experience

This class is taught in English.
All students will improve their understanding of the writing process and, ultimately, how to build an essay.
About Me
Hello! My name is Melanie Howell, and I have been an independent school teacher for more than twenty-five years. I am the author of Will's Ride, a lovely picture book about a boy and his adaptive bike. I enjoy hosting a Facebook page for teachers called Teaching Matters and a Youtube channel called The Teacher's Playbook.

Creating a dynamic learning environment where students feel safe and supported is the first essential element to my teaching style. I meet each student at their level, providing academic support, redirection, and genuine praise.

Classroom Policies:

Students are required to have working cameras and microphones in class positioned such that students and teacher can both see and hear each other clearly for the entirety of the class. Collaboration makes the class more engaging and fun.

Last-minute signups are common; I try not to cancel until an hour before the class begins.

After ten minutes, if no students have arrived in the virtual classroom, I will exit the classroom. In some cases, rescheduling is possible. Refunds are generally not offered for missed classes.

Nearly 30 years of classroom experience has taught me that real learning- the kind that makes its way into long-term memory- only happens when there is mutual trust and respect between teacher and student. My central objective is to maximize each student's potential and encourage students to embrace and take ownership of their learning.

I have Orton-Gillingham training and HillRAP training in reading and writing instruction. My most recent experience includes teaching a novel-based approach to literature, creative writing, essay writing, vocabulary instruction, and study skills. In addition to teaching, I have served as a school administrator, on the curriculum/academic team, and as co-chair of my school's re-accreditation process.

I love to read and spend time with family. I wrote a picture book called Will's Ride, available on the Barnes & Noble website, Amazon, and several (local) independent bookstores.

I love working with students to develop an appreciation for language and literature. My central objective is to encourage students to embrace and take ownership of their learning. Teaching students to "read like a writer" is one way to achieve this goal.
Students may spend time editing their essays.
Please communicate with me before class if your learner has specific questions about the 5-paragraph essay. Otherwise, I will come to class prepared with a writing topic (prompt) and instruction for that topic. Thank you!
30 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
