Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 3
Beginner Level
Writing can be an overwhelming concept for some students - so why not make it fun? In this one on one writing tutoring course, I zero in on the needs of your student when it comes to writing composition, and help develop those skills. This ELA course is just the writing - from letter formation all the way up to multi-paragraph essays. I use the interests of your child to guide the writing, so they are more engaged and eager to express their ideas.

Topics include:

Foundational Skills: letter formation, capitalization, punctuation, spacing
Sentence Structure: creating complete sentences, with topics and actions
Expanding Sentences: identifying ways to increase detail and expand thoughts in a sentence
Graphic Organizers: using graphic organizers to collect thoughts and ideas for use in longer form writing
Paragraph & Essay Structure: creating paragraphs with a logical flow, including topic sentences, details and conclusion sentences
Writing Types: exploring various forms of writing including opinion, informational and narrative

Each lesson in this course takes up to 20 minutes, and is designed to be completed twice a week - just perfect for busy students. This can be utilized as a full curriculum class for writing. Or, as short term writing tutoring. Lessons will be delivered through a combination of traditional pen and paper work, typing, and discussion.

I use a laid back teaching style that is more collaborative than authoritative, and I love tailoring lessons to fit the need. Please feel free to share with me what your child would like to write about. In the past, I've had students write about Minecraft, Among Us, Star Wars, basketball, soccer, cooking, their favorite TV show / movie, and many other things. No matter what your current skills are - we can write about those favorite things. Think of this as a writing skills camp, or an English writing course!

If students are hand-writing longer form work, they will need lined paper and something to write with each class. If they are typing, they will need to be able to open a writing program such as Google Docs or Microsoft Word independently.
