Homework
1-2 hours per week. Each week, students will complete assigned homework from the Wordly Wise series independently, which should take around 60-90 minutes. This comprises a vocabulary section, reading comprehension with questions, and a short written piece. Students are asked to send me their completed work by an agreed-upon time. I will mark this work and provide feedback on a weekly basis, to help address any challenging areas and ensure progression of skills.Assessment
Assessment will occur weekly both formally through the marking and feedback for each lesson, as well as informally during our class sessions together. I encourage students to keep all marked work as a growing reference bank. This is a wonderfully useful resource to help students build on their vocabulary and reading comprehension skills, as well as to draw on for their own writing purposes.Class Experience
Beginner - Advanced Level
** Please note I have no more available slots for the remainder of 2024. I live in Australia so my time zone works well for students in North America and Asia, specifically Korea and Japan. Please reach out for 2025 availability or if you have any questions at all regarding these classes. ** 🌈 This is an ongoing class offering individual tuition for students as we develop our vocabulary base, reading comprehension, literary analysis and critical-thinking skills through the enriching lessons of the Wordly Wise series. If you have not yet heard of this learning program, I am so passionate about it! I have used Wordly Wise for several years now with my students and highly recommend it as a valuable resource to support your child's learning journey. 🌈 Our sessions will be personalized to support the attainment of students’ individual academic goals. 🌈 We usually take two weeks to complete each lesson, focusing on the vocabulary part for the first lesson, followed by the reading comprehension for the next. 🌈 Key objectives for the vocabulary part will be building on our vocabulary bank; identifying the part of speech for each word; understanding the definition(s) for each word; developing a greater awareness of the nuances of different words; and being able to use and apply this vocabulary in different contexts. 🌈 Key objectives for the reading comprehension session include practicing our reading fluency and comprehension, performing an in-depth analysis of the text (including understanding the passage as whole and discussing the author's intent and message, identifying the main idea for each topic, making connections and inferences, annotating important information, asking questions and drawing conclusions); and continuing to develop the analytical skills required to help facilitate our understanding and analysis of different texts -- in both written and verbal form. 🌈 Each week, students will complete assigned homework and return their work to me as a PDF by an agreed-upon time for marking. I will provide feedback during our next class together, and if necessary, we will also complete any corrections together. 🌈 I aim to make my classes a positive and supportive environment, where we can have fun through learning. We always learn best when relaxed and engaged, and I endeavor to facilitate classes that encourage this.
Learning Goals
Students will learn explicit academic vocabulary instruction, and how to apply these words in the context of reading, writing and critical thinking skills. They will also develop their reading comprehension skills in being able to analyze a variety of texts and respond to a set of questions citing appropriate evidence from the passage.
