Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 9
Intermediate - Advanced Level
In these 50-minute, 1:1 weekly tutoring sessions, students will be given help with reading and writing tailored to fit the learner’s circumstances and needs. Students will be able to share their assignments through screen sharing so we can work together. These sessions can focus on either specific assignments that the student needs help with or practice with language arts skills. I can assist with guiding students through the writing process, including finding and incorporating strong text evidence into their work, revising their writing, and finally editing for grammar, punctuation, and spelling. I have twenty-odd years of experience in the classroom, as well as one-to-one, and every year my learners' test scores improved significantly.

Your child will learn some basic formulas for writing:
-constructed response paragraphs
-essays
-academic writing of many types

Your child will practice:
- reading fiction and nonfiction texts
- writing skills
- sentence structure
- grammar
- punctuation
- elements of fiction
- figurative language
- analyzing texts
- writing essays

If you'd like your child to have homework, with feedback on HW between classes, then please look for my similar class offering that includes this option. Thanks!

***Parent communication 48 hours prior to the first session is required to help plan for instruction. I need you to share your understanding of your child's academic needs so that I can tailor lessons accordingly. Please let me know your goals for this class. Sharing information helps me do a better job! !

(Please note that I don't teach handwriting; I teach the writing process and reading comprehension.)

Through my 20-plus years of teaching experience, I have taken pride in my role as a writing coach. Developing warm relationships with my students is important, and I get great joy when former students visit or message me to brag about how well they are doing because of the writing skills they mastered in my classes. Part of the learning process also involves chatting with your child in order to learn more about their likes, dislikes, strengths, etc.

REFUND POLICY
Please understand that these are regular weekly sessions. If a student is more than 10 minutes late, it will be considered a missed class, per Outschool policy. However, if you send me a message to let me know that the student is running late, I am happy to wait for your child! The class is not eligible for a refund if missed, however. If the student needs to cancel class, I will reschedule when possible or issue a refund, as long as I am notified 48 hours in advance. (Exceptions may be made for emergency situations.) However, please understand that my business depends on students who can commit to regular weekly attendance. Thus, if your child needs to cancel more than once or so a semester because of vacations and such, I may have to open the spot to other students.

Learning Goals

The student will receive one-on-one ELA help and gain a stronger proficiency in language arts, including reading and writing skills.
