Class Experience

In this 1:1 class, we will work together to overcome challenges that students are facing academically.

Throughout my career as a special education teacher, then Intervention Coordinator, and now as an Educational Advocate, I have seen the power of individualized education. I have witnessed the uniqueness of each learner and I have seen incredible academic gains when the right interventions are in place.

So many students hear that they should "study more" or "take better notes," but those terms are vague and often students don't understand what these things should look like or feel like. This can lead to frustration, overwhelm, and a general apathy toward school.

As an educator and a parent, it makes me so incredibly sad when students have lost their love for learning. My goal as a teacher is to put a spark back into learning, to give students the chance to explore concepts, use their creativity, and learn in ways that work for them.

During our course, students should come prepared with any assignments, questions, general difficulties, etc...
We will work together to determine a goal for our session(s) and identify specific strategies that work for your learner individually. I often begin by explaining the role of executive functions and how we can identify supports that we will use (like using a model, drawing a picture, etc..) based on the executive function we want to support.

For example, a student may come to a tutoring session and they say they aren't doing well in math. This is what they would like to focus on (or grown ups, what you would like to focus on).
From there, I will ask a series of follow up questions.
- Do you feel like you understand until you take the test?
- How do you feel when you are in class? Are you comfortable asking questions?
- How do you use your notes? How do you take notes?
- How do you structure your time? Do you plan ahead to study? Do you have the tools you need?

These questions are just examples based on students I've had in the past. However, each learner is different and each tutoring session is catered specifically to your learner and the concerns they have as a student or your concerns as the parent.

No outside supplies are necessarily needed, but students are encouraged to bring whatever they are working on in school that they would like to focus on during our tutoring session. This could be their planner if we were going to focus on time management, their binder if we wanted to focus on organization, or a project or assignment if we were going to focus on project planning or goal setting.

Hi! My name is Rhea and I'm so happy you're here. 🙂
In 2017, I graduated with honors from Towson University - earning my Bachelor's in Elementary and Special Education. After graduation, I began my career in special education and went on to become an Intervention Coordinator. This gave me the opportunity to apply my extensive experience identifying and utilizing individual interventions on a school-wide level.

I am now the proud owner of an educational advocacy and consulting agency, through which I work to bridge the gap between educators and families. Coupled with my work on Outschool, I am able to provide a cohesive experience for families - providing both students and parents with the resources they need to thrive. If you'd like to learn more about services for parents, you can visit www.myeducationworks.org to learn more.

My favorite thing about teaching is seeing the potential in students - sometimes long before they see it in themselves. I firmly believe in an approach to education that is individualized, empathetic, encouraging, and always student-centered.

In every class, students are encouraged to use their inquisitive nature and their creativity to help them learn through self-discovery - creating a much deeper and impactful learning experience. I believe in student-led learning and creating experiences for students rather than talking "at them."

When I'm not teaching, I can often be found exploring nature with my own two little boys, spending time with my pets, or snuggled up with a good book.

Thank you so much for stopping by my profile and exploring the course offerings. I am so honored that you have considered me as your child's teacher. I look forward to meeting your learner!
