Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 6
In this 1-1 private session I will be available to tutor your child ages 6-12. If you are looking for dyslexia support and are outside this age range please let me know. I may still be able to help. In this session I will be using the Barton System to help your student sort, recognize and organize language in a way that makes more sense to his brain. This is not an easy out or remedy but going through the Barton System will give your child the tools he needs to be more successful in reading and spelling. No one wants to struggle.

The Barton Reading & Spelling System is based on the Orton-Gillingham approach. Lessons are multi-sensory and structured. Each lesson is very methodical and must be given in order, as they will build on one another. Regardless of age, each student must start on Level 1. There are 10 levels all together and it can take up to 4-5 years to complete the entire program. (Remember the levels do not refer to grade levels.) The program is not overly exciting or entertaining but can be effective in giving the dyslexic student the tools needed to be more successful in reading and spelling. Here is a list of the levels for your viewing:

1. Phonemic Awareness
2. Consonants & Short Vowels
3. Closed Syllables and Units
4. Syllable Division & Vowel Teams
5. Prefixes and Suffixes
6. Six Reasons for Silent-E
7. Vowel-R Syllables
8. Advanced Vowel Teams
9. Influences of Foreign Languages
10. Greek Words & Latin Roots

The minimal recommended time for Barton System tutoring is 45 min 2x per week. For the first session or two I will be talking with your student to get to know him as a learner. I will ask general questions about how he feels about learning. I will also assess the student to better understand strengths and weaknesses. Once I have a better understanding of the learner I will begin the Barton System Level 1, Lesson 1 with him. As mentioned this is a highly structured, multi sensory program. You will notice that the system is methodical and repetitive. Two of the main resources that the student needs access to are color tiles and student pages. A number of years ago Barton partnered with a platform called Whizzimo. The Whizzimo Barton option allows Barton tutors to easily and effectively tutor their students online by providing the tiles and student pages on the tutor's computer screen -- for the tutor and for the student to see in real time. The student is able to easily move the tiles on the screen using their own mouse.

Remember dyslexia has nothing to do with intelligence. The dyslexic brain is wired differently so the dyslexic learner needs additional tools - to traditional methods already received- in order to access certain information in his brain. The Barton System will not "cure" dyslexia but will give coping mechanisms to make reading and spelling easier. If you have further questions regarding this tutor session feel free to PM me.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have 12 years experience as an elementary school teacher. Throughout my teaching career I've worked with PreK-12th grade. I completed my graduate work in 2008, receiving my M.Ed. in Literacy. My education provided me with experience in reading remediation, reading assessment and best practices teaching reading and writing. I was able to take this knowledge and these resources to the classroom to better scaffold my students' learning. As I continued teaching I recognized a number of students that continued to struggle. I worked closely with these students to help remediate their reading and writing skills. Throughout the journey of working with these students I was introduced to the Barton Spelling and Reading System. Signs of dyslexia were seen on both sides of my family and so it caught my interest quickly. I attended an informational seminar of the Barton System and knew immediately it was something needed at our school. Bringing it to the board it was approved to purchase the first two levels. I was able to tutor individual students and having learned the strategies bring a few of them into general practice in my classroom. It made a big difference in both scenarios. I am happy to be able to offer that to other students so they too can know success.
