Class Experience

Please read the instructions below and message me *before* signing up for a session.

What this class is:

This class is designed to provide one-time support for students who are* taking a French course* or who are interested in a single topic, (including one *specific* conversation topic), relevant to the study of French. I provide help with a concept, skill, or enrichment item in a live session.

This class is also for my current students who would like a 1:1 make-up or catch-up tutorial.

What this class isn't:

This class is not designed to provide ongoing curriculum or support. I have other long-form or ongoing classes for that kind of structure. Also, if a student is seeking general conversation practice, he or she will best be served by a curriculum as vocabulary generation situated within contextualized grammar structures is supported through listening exercises, vocal training, ear training, as well as speaking over planned, relevant situational material. (Note: accent is less important than any of these things when communicating in another language unless speaking something like a tonal language, e.g., Chinese, Thai, etc. This one-time class is not appropriate for holistic conversation training or ambiguous conversation practice goals.)*

Class expectations

- Before the session: Please message me with a specific topic or assignment for a single session before you sign up. I will let you know if this is an appropriate class for your topic.

- During the session: I will teach, review, or practice the specific topic as requested. General topics such as, "pronunciation," or "conversation practice," or, "grammar," are too broad.

Examples of appropriate specific topics are:

--A brief overview of when to use the subjunctive in French
--What language training apps/programs do you recommend for an independent learner?
--Help understanding silent letters in French
--I have an assignment where I have to introduce myself in French and record it. I am not sure I am doing the assignment correctly.
--I am missing a lot of questions in my online course because I can't type accents. What do I do?

- After the session: I will direct students to additional resources available on the Internet or create specific materials for practice and review where possible

*If you do not see any available sessions, please request a session with a few suggestions regarding the day and time for me to add for you. I will follow up with a message to you before I list to confirm a day and time. Thank you!*

Learning Goals

Students will improve or advance their understanding of French or Spanish language topics as requested in advance which may include, but are not limited to, *single specific topics* on:

Vocabulary
Pronunciation
Grammar
Reading Comprehension
Listening Comprehension
Writing
Punctuation
Culture
Literature
AP or Subject Test Preparation
Dual-enrollment College/University Course Support

Note that you will need to message me *before* signing up to ensure I have the appropriate resources for you.

I have taught French and Spanish at all levels from middle school to college since 1995. I have designed online language courses since 1999. I believe online learning is an effective way to learn a language, both as a teacher and a learner. I am eager to see all students enjoy and succeed in their language studies.

See below for student responses to the question: "How did your teacher communicate with you and how frequently?"

(Note, student grammatical, spelling, and punctuation errors are preserved.)

"My teacher talked to me often, she helped me alot [sic] through out this course. She would keep me updated, give me tips and helped me if i [sic] was stuck, she also would say good morning and things like that, i [sic] know its [sic] not relavant [sic] but i [sic] thought that was really nice."

"She would always end with have a good day and a lot of teachers don't do that."

"YES. She was great. Best teacher as far as communication that I have had while doing online classes."

"She sent us tips and tricks and responded on time to any questions or concerns."

"I would ask her questions about the guided practices and grading. She would update me on assignments I didn't finish."

"She went in depth to answer my questions in a timely manner, and never made me feel like the question was dumb to ask. she [sic] also reached out to me with things i [sic] could to to do better understand the lesson and help my grade."

"This was my first time taking an online course. I was really scared and worried it would be hard but it wasn't. i [sic] rarely ever had technical issues. My teacher helped me and explained every question i [sic] had. My teacher made sure i [sic] was always on task and assisted me with tasks i [sic] should complete. Overall my experience was great , and i [sic] would recommend this class."

"I was able to learn things that were supposed to be covered in [the course] in school but my teacher didn't cover it well. The communication between the teacher and students was well oriented and it would be hard to misunderstand the messages she sends. I enjoyed this course!"
