Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 4
Beginner Level
🦋Does your child need a private 1:1 reading tutor to help with their reading? I will get started with that with my no-nonsense approach. We will go over the most common phonograms, rimes and word pairs. Read simple books that I made myself and reinforce what we read with comprehension questions. Worksheets that I made will be provided. My fun Cowboy Joe is integrated in all of my PDFs for added fun.

🦋My friendly and feisty large puppet Cowboy Joe will chime in and also "read" sentences. The puppet is not for "babies" as I am a puppeteer and I have had adults and older teenage children love the interactions while I teach structured reading lessons. My younger learners giggle while learning to read happily. This technique helps to keep my students engaged while having fun reading in a systematic approach.

🦋My class will be focused on helping students to read so do not worry as I am meticulous when it comes to reading success for your child. This class is all about reading and not play time as I want to focus on words and sentences through my various activities. Students of all ages who struggle with reading may attend.

🦋During the class, the students will focus on addressing word recognition, decoding of words and nonsense words to ensure accurate interpretation of words, and if needed phonics and phoneme segmentation review. I will cover a range of topics including phonological and phonemic awareness, sight words, grammar, sequencing, reading comprehension, and much more.

🦋To ensure that the class is tailored to each student's level, parents should let me know ahead of time what approximate grade level of reading their child is at so that I can prepare appropriate activities. But if you forget or are not sure, that's no problem as I do perform 2 brief reading screenings at the word and sentence level to see approximately where they are at. Keeping in mind that I only use my curriculum and activities that are planned. I do not use one approach as I feel that each child may have their own needs.

🦋I will review the student's reading level and focus on phonemic awareness, structured literacy, oral reading practice, and comprehension for a variety of multi-sensory experiences which will occasionally include writing on occasion with PDFs given after the class. I start the class with easier reading activities and progress from there to more advanced levels.

🦋Keep in mind that this is a reading practice class and therefore I will not be performing an intensive reading assessment as I want your child to get to reading and not waste valuable time with lengthy assessments. If your child needs an intensive reading assessment before taking this class you may want to find another instructor who will do that for you. I use my curriculum and will not be using any other reading programs as I have researched and planned my activities ahead of time. Ready to teach with Cowboy Joe!

🦋I will also teach students to see the natural segmentation patterns of the written words by training the students further with phonograms and rimes. I find that some children have been taught so much phonics by sounding out each letter of the word, which is fine at the beginning of their reading journey, however, they are not very familiar OR versed with the patterns of the most common phonograms. These will be taught in each class regardless of reading level for the child to also focus on these patterns and therefore build more fluency. For older or upper-grade students, I will be using more multisyllabic words to help them along.

🦋Remember also that a child may be able to "read" the words in sentences but their fluency rate may be slow because they are having difficulty in decoding or they be compensating by reading a bit too fast and skipping over words or substituting words for another assumed word. Assessments may overlook this in the process of functional reading as many of these focus on nonsense words. These are fine for decoding purposes but may frustrate and confuse the struggling dyslexic reader if the focus is on nonsense words.

🦋Some children are noted to be able to use other words in the sentences as cues but may not be able to fully grasp the exact meaning of the sentence due to substituting words. This will affect reading comprehension as they progress in school and may impact grades once they have completed the 3rd and/or 4th grades dependent on where they go to school or are homeschooled. Therefore, I will also make sure to educate the learner on the importance of reading with intent and purpose.

🦋I use several structured reading programs to informally track each student's progress, and I save the activities they complete on one so that we can build on them in future classes. I keep an "old fashioned" index card for all my students in case they enroll again. I use activities and short video clips that I have created to keep the class engaging and varied.

🦋This class is a great class to join, even if your child is receiving classes from other reading instructors.
