Homework
1 hour per week. Depending on student needs, students will receive activities to complete for 10-15 minutes a day, 3-5 days a week. Some tasks may include speed word lists, phonics activities, writing activities (linked to phonics or creative text responses), decodable reading passages, and dictation activities.
Assessment
Assessment is always ongoing during these tutoring sessions, and I will respond to arising needs, gaps, and extension. In the first 1:1 session, I will assess a student's phonemic awareness and spelling appropriate to their year level (or current level if provided before the session, whether that is lower or higher than expected).
Grading
I am happy to create certificates of completion upon request.

Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 4
Beginner - Advanced Level
Is your learner not making expected progress in spelling? Or perhaps they need maintenance or extension? 1:1 spelling tutoring is specifically for these learners who need more explicit teaching of spelling rules from a certified teacher and literacy expert.

I use evidence from an initial spelling assessment to target learning and make the most of our sessions together. My lessons are fun, interactive, and a safe environment for learning. The learner will feel more confident in their abilities over time!

What to expect:
My lessons generally follow a structure of: Review, Teach (I do, we do), Practice, and Apply (you do), using the Liz Kane Literacy scope and sequence from 'The Code'. I use a combination of engaging digital and physical resources, also working with what the learner has available to them in their own study space. It is highly recommended that the optional homework is completed outside of the tutoring session times to accelerate student progress. Ideally, the student and I would meet 1:1, two times a week. It can also work as a weekly session, although progress may not be as accelerated.

I'm also happy to align these sessions with the learner's current homework to support their progress within their classroom.

EFL/ESL learners welcome.

What is Structured Literacy?
Our brains are hardwired to learn how to talk but not how to read and write! Structured Literacy is an evidence-based approach to teaching the science of reading English. It is fun, engaging and produces excellent results. Teaching is very systematic and follows a clear teaching sequence that cumulates over time to develop fluent readers and writers. Children learn letter sounds and spelling patterns to help them understand the English alphabetic code. There are 44 sounds in the English language but approximately 250 ways of representing those sounds. Structured Literacy is aligned with the Orton-Gillingham teaching approach.
In practice, this looks like:
- Explicit, sequential lessons of grapheme-phoneme relationships and heart (sight) words
- Cumulative practice and ongoing review
- A high level of student-teacher interaction
- Carefully selected examples and support material
- Prompt, corrective feedback

Please reach out if the available times are unsuitable - I have some flexibility in my schedule and will try my best to make it work for us both.
Learning Goals
- to improve knowledge of spelling patterns in English
- to become confident in spelling and writing

I absolutely love teaching literacy! I have worked alongside literacy experts in my educational leadership roles and am very experienced in extending gifted learners beyond the scope of their current grade level, as well as accelerating progress for those who need an extra boost. When I see my students' progress, this brings me so much joy, especially when I start to see their confidence grow!

I have several years of classroom experience delivering carefully planned, targeted curriculum to children in primary/elementary schools. My other specialties are literature, ESOL, mathematics, visual arts, and social-emotional skills. I also have experience teaching the Montessori Method, reflected in my calm and caring teaching persona.
