Description
Class Experience
In this one-on-one class, I will assist students with reading or writing. I can help guide your learner with SAT prep, writing a formal essay or book report, creative writing, reading comprehension, homework help, or anything your learner needs. I will briefly assess learners to try to measure their specific needs or parents can tell me what areas they would like tutoring in. In our first session, your learner will read and/or write for me- depending on the skills we are working on. This...
Learners will improve their reading and writing skills while having fun and remaining engaged. Learners will learn to use and practice skills used in independent writing, reflect on their written work, and make revisions to create a final, polished sentence, paragraph, or essay. They will also learn about the planning (pre-writing) and writing process. Learners will learn to use and practice skills used in independent reading such as decoding, monitoring comprehension, inferencing, and even conducting a deeper analysis of fiction and nonfiction pieces.
I am certified to teach grades 7-12 (middle and high school level) English/Language Arts in the state of Texas. I have taught 7th grade English for about three years. I also have two years experience tutoring all subjects to high schoolers. This includes language arts, college entrance exam prep (SAT), essay writing, and the college admissions process.
Learners may be asked to complete some work outside of class. This is not a requirement, however. It is ultimately up to the learner and grownups, but could help move things along faster (if you are on a deadline) and provide further practice of skills.
Students may want to use a pen/pencil and paper. I may also create PDF worksheets that will be posted in the classroom and can be printed once I know the learner's needs. Learners may also need to access a Google Doc to work out of. If this is the case, I will post a link in the classroom for learners to use. They do not need a Google account and should only work out of the doc using the link provided as that will ensure learner anonymity and contact policies are followed.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Assessment will depend on student needs. Ongoing informal assessment will always occur. Initial assessment will occur in the first class meeting or prior to it in the form of an overall evaluation. Formal assessment will occur when applicable in the form of a final product such as fully revised and edited essay or book report.
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
