Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 3
Is your student struggling with reading? Are you unsure on how to help them move forward with their reading skills?
My approach for helping students progress and improve upon reading is through gamification: fun lessons using interactive games. The lessons I base my class on is the Explode the Code series of books.

This class helps students learn the beginning phonetic sounds of the alphabet including compound words, common endings ful, ing, est, ed, ness, syllable division between double consonants, syllable division between different consonants, syllable division, open and closed syllables, syllable division with open syllables, syllable division with closed syllables, syllable division with open syllables syllable division with closed syllables, syllable division with syllables ending in-y, syllable division with syllables ending in ie, vowel digraph syllables: ai, ay, ea, ee, oa, ow, syllable vision with three- syllable words. Students will complete reading, writing, and spelling activities using nearpod.com for interactive learning by drawing on the screen. (paper and pencil will be needed for some of the pages as well). An interactive game will be played at the end of the lesson as well to reinforce what the student had learned in class. In class the teacher will use screen sharing to show student activities covering the phonetic sound that we will do together in class.

Lessons are lined up as the following:
 Lesson 1: compound words;
Lesson 2: common ending; ful, ing, est, ed, ness
  Lesson 3: syllable division between double consonants;
Lesson 4: syllable division between different consonants
 Lesson 5: review lesson;
Lesson 6: open and closed syllables
 Lesson 7: syllable division with open syllables;
Lesson 8: syllable division with syllables ending in y
 Lesson 9: syllable division with syllables ending in ie;
Lesson 10: vowel digraph syllable ai, ay, ea, ee, oa ow
 Lesson 11: syllable division with three-syllable words;
Lesson 12: syllable division with three-syllable words

At the end of class we will have an interactive game time on one of three sites: nearpod; using the sounds learned in that class. It is recommended students have another device to play the game on but it is not required. Students can play on the same device they are in the zoom classroom in. This is also recommended for the lesson as well. Parents are encouraged to be prepared before class and be available to help their students with this portion of the class if needed. At the end of class a PDF worksheet will be provided in the outschool classroom, and a link and code to the game on nearpod to play after class is over independently.
Learning Goals

Parental Guidance
Students are asked in class to read and write the words we practice in class. It is recommended that students have paper and pencil to practice writing with. You can print out the attachment in below section and put it in plastic paper sleeve, and then they can use a dry erase marker to practice with. Fine tip markers are recommended. We will be using nearpod.com for the lesson and games. A link and code will be given in class to join the game. Teacher will use screen sharing as well to share lesson materials.
Supply List
Paper, pencil, Markers, crayons, to practice writing.
You can print out the below practice writing page. Put the paper in a plastic paper sleeve, and give them a dry erase marker to practice writing with on this and a cloth to wipe off. :)
Or paper and pencil works too.
