Description

Class Experience

Students will have opportunities to develop and strengthen the reading skills they wish to, through direct and explicit instruction tailored to their needs.
After 27 years in the classroom teaching students to read, and after several years providing reading intervention, I believe that reading can easily become intimidating when it is challenging for a learner and can quickly cause students to lose confidence. When learners are taught with care and warmth, and they experience wins, they grow in confidence and stay motivated.
Learners will be expected to practice the skills taught during instruction, throughout the week, outside of class. Ideally, this should take no more than 10-15 minutes per day, depending on the student's pace. Some of these are printable materials for student's practice at home. Please be sure to see the "Materials" list as well, and let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
From our first week together, moving forward, students need a 9"x12" dry erase board, dry erase markers, and an eraser. Depending on each learner's needs, I may request that parents purchase certain materials for use during instruction and during homework practice each week. Examples are: play-do, pipe cleaners, popsicle sticks, etc. In addition, use of a printer will be frequently needed.
I will continually provide informal assessing throughout the lesson, and provide weekly feedback to parents.
35 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
