Class Experience

US Grade Preschool - 1
Beginner Level
If you are a homeschooling family and your child is ready for reading, but you're not sure where to start, this is the class for you. If you've tried different approaches to helping your child with reading and it's not working, I can help!

Reading unlocks a world of knowledge for children, and starting out with a solid phonetic foundation is essential! Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear and manipulate the sounds in spoken words. In this class, students will master each letter sound and begin manipulating those sounds to build and segment words. This is the first step to becoming a successful reader!

I will use Acadience Reading assessments to track your child's progress with things like first sound fluency, phoneme segmenting fluency and nonsense word reading fluency.

We will begin with a phonics inventory to develop a plan that is individualized to the needs of your child and the scope and sequence will be as follows:

1. Letter sound and printing inventory
2. First sound fluency (identifying the first letter sound in a word)
3. Blending and decoding (putting 2 or 3 letter sounds together)
4. Segmenting and spelling (mapping out the sounds in a spoken word)
5. Decodable passages (practicing decoding skills learned so far)

Lessons will always include 3 components:

- Review letter sounds and skills from previous lessons
- Introduction of a new letter sound or skill
- Fluency practice using games and activities

I use mnemonic letter cards, letter tiles and games to keep it fun and engaging for young learners!
