Homework
1-2 hours per week. Homework is optional. Please indicate whether the student would prefer to receive this homework. Depending on student needs, students may receive passages or texts to read, and comprehension activities to complete. All students, whether completing homework or not, are encouraged to follow their reading passions and share any self-directed reading activities with me!
Assessment
Assessment is always ongoing during these tutoring sessions, and I will be responding to arising needs, gaps, and extension. I will initially assess a student's reading fluency and comprehension in fiction and nonfiction texts. Over time, I will use my teacher judgement as to when the student will need to be reassessed. This will also be done in a 1:1 session with the student and may require the student to pre-read a text unassisted as homework prior to the assessment. If families/students would like an assessment of the student’s phonemic awareness and phonics knowledge, I can assess these areas in another session upon request (in addition to the first two assessments).
Grading
Depending on the student's self-directed reading activities, I can provide constructive feedback on text responses that students complete and submit in their own time. Comprehensive feedback can be in the 1:1 tutoring session or in an additional session that week.

Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 5
Intermediate - Advanced Level
This is a 1:1 reading extension class developed specifically for gifted readers. In the first two sessions, the student and I will get to know each other, and I will use a comprehensive reading assessment tool to determine their reading age, strengths, and learning needs.

Assessment and Action Planning:
I will initially assess a student's reading fluency and comprehension* in fiction and nonfiction texts as this will inform the following sessions. As this is a comprehensive assessment, this will be split across two 25-minute sessions (can be booked back-to-back depending on scheduling availability, please message me to enquire about booking a private meeting time). After these assessments, I will evaluate the results and develop a personal action plan for the student. In each following session, I will formatively assess their progress and adjust the lessons to meet their arising learning needs.
*If families/students would like an assessment of the student’s phonemic awareness and phonics knowledge, I can assess these areas in another session upon request.

Lesson Structure:
My lessons generally follow a structure of: Review, Teach (I do, we do), Practice, and Apply (you do). Depending on student needs, the lessons will involve explicit instruction on specific comprehension question types (e.g. literal, inference, evaluation, reaction), studying genre and text types, vocabulary development, creative text responses, and time for the student to share their personal reading interests and choices. I use a combination of engaging digital and physical resources, also working with what the learner has available to them in their own study space. It is recommended that the optional homework is completed outside of the tutoring session times to support student progress, however homework isn't compulsory as students may want to self-direct their own reading over the week. Ideally, the student and I would meet 1:1, once a week.
Learning Goals
Learning goals vary depending on the individual reader. All students will be extended in their reading comprehension and capability to respond to different passages and texts.
