Class Experience

US Grade 7 - 10
Beginner - Advanced Level
In this class, students will learn the basics of drawing and editing photos with Photoshop.
📢 This class is for any still skill level. No previous knowledge of Photoshop is required.

Opening Photoshop for the first time can be scary with over 5,000 different options/buttons. Photoshop can feel like a very foreign place to any newcomer. With this friendly Photoshop introduction, it can be incredibly exciting experience for students.

If you love to draw, edit photos, or create goofy photo-collage scenes, and you love the Photoshop app., I'll teach you how to edit your photos, add special effects, draw fun art scenes, and utilize Photoshops amazing tools to create fun art and photos that you've been dreaming of.

💡 If Photoshop is installed on the same computer as Zoom, it would be easier for students to show what they are doing, if they need help. They could also be able to show their classmates what they created.

ITINERARY:
What the students would be doing during each club meeting...
(These 1:1 class sessions will be learner-directed, so the direction will this class goes varies depending on the student.)

Week 1: How to Start a Photoshop Project (For students who never used Photoshop before)
✔ The first week will start with about 5 minutes of introductions for with the new student in the class.
✔ Students are instructed on how to start a Photoshop project.
✔ Students are introduced to the different tools on Photoshop.
    * If the student shares their screen while using Photoshop, the instructor can give assistance with annotation.
    * Here are some of the Photoshop tools this project would introduce:
Layer Introduction, Brush Tools, Paint Bucket Tool, Eraser Tool, Bucket Tool, etc.
    * If there is extra time, student will be introduced to the gradient tool to create an interesting background!

Week 2: Working with Photoshop's Layers
✔ Students are introduced to "layers".
    * The learning objective of this project is to enable students to understand the concept of layers. They learn to understand this visually by creating a face (or it could be a plate of food). After demonstrating how to make layers students can then create additional layers independently.

Week 3: Editing Photos
The learner will be given old photos to edit (or they can open up their own).
They will practice fixing up a photo and playing around with Color Enhancements/Adjustments.
These Photoshop concepts are introduced in this project: Clone Tool, Patch Tool, Healing Brush Tools, Content Aware Move Tool, Blur/Sharpen Tools

Other weeks...
As these 1:1 class sessions are learner-directs, there are other possible Photoshop themed ideas that will be done in these classes with the student:
✔ Making Goofy Photo Scenes. (Example: Taking a cat's head and put it on a person's body. Then add sunglass and a hat!)
✔ Learning how to do Rotoscoping and turning video frames into animated cartoons. Or add special effects.

This is a LIVE class and is NOT pre-recorded.
This class will be presented via cameras from the instructor. Students can interact with the instructor, as well ask questions during instruction.

No writing or independent reading is necessary.
Students are expected to communicate with the teacher. Communication, visuals, and hands-on instruction are all the things that are important in helping the students get a better understanding of the subject.

Supply List
Materials Needed:
✔️ Computer (Windows Preferred, but Macintosh would also work. Photoshop doesn't work on Chromebook.)
✔️ Photoshop (Any Photoshop CC version... or even the older CS versions will work fine.)
💡 If you have a good internet connection you can use the free Photopea software, which is a clone of Photoshop.
It looks just like Photoshop and has most of the tools, including newer features like "Puppet Warp" and healing brush tools.
It also works great on the Chromebook. You can find it here: https://www.photopea.com/

Hi, my name is Raymond Mullikin. 👋

I am a professional cartoonist and credentialed teacher from San Luis Obispo, California.

I teach classes in Cartooning, Comic Book Printing and Publishing, 2D Cartoon Animation, Claymation/Stop Motion, Toy Figure Design, Video Game and App Coding, Creative Writing, etc.

I am also a professional illustrator/writer and Creative Director for Raytoons Comics. The Raytoons website is at Raytoons.Net. I have published cartoons in books, magazines, newspapers, and e-cards. I am an app designer who have designed my own games and software for schools and Appstores. I have also done past work in animation, creating animated film shorts for film festivals around the world.

I graduated from the University of Laverne with a Teaching Credential (2012) and a BA in Liberal Studies (2009). I also have certifications in Early Childhood Education, Technology and 2D Design. I've worked in education for 20+ years (including a few years in Special Ed) and have been doing contract teaching since 2009. I teach art and technology to children and adults of all ages.

How students approach a learning task can strongly influence the quality of their learning outcomes. For me, my approach is often very hands on (kinesthetic) with a lot of visual examples... That's how I've learned things, with a more creative approach. I have a lot of this in my instruction, with a mix of direct and interactive instruction with lots of Experiential Learning hands on!
It is also important to me to get feedback from both children and parents... Some kids have some very clever ideas! And, in teaching, there is always room for expansion of ideas and improving oneself.

I love drawing, comics, writing, creating my own games, and reading. Pretty much everything that I teach I enjoy and do professionally. I also enjoy teaching and thank all the parents and students willing to give me a try! 😃
