Class Experience

Ways to Wake Up The Muse! Find your creative zone & write some stories!

In this 1on1 private class, the learner participates in fun ideas and activities from author Raymond Mullikin to help jumpstart writing, getting over writers block, and to stay inspired.

The activities are designed to both encourage reluctant writers (and to challenge enthusiastic writers) in a supportive, encouraging atmosphere. Students are encouraged to write with their own style and their own voice, using their own imagination. The more we do it the better (and comfortable with writing) we get... Students will be doing a lot of writing in this class! They will write out their thoughts and ideas, as well as poems and stories.

ITINERARY:
What the students would be doing during each meeting...
(These 1:1 class sessions will be learner-directed, so the direction will this class often varies depending on the student.)

Week 1: Thinking of New Ideas / Overcoming Writers Block
✔ Introduction / Slideshow - Instructor introduces himself and that what he has done with writing.
✔ Talking about why people have trouble writing.
✔ Creative Writing – It’s basically the art of making things up.
✔ Talking about "Writers Block"
✔ Building up Courage Activity

Week 2: Writing Practice
✔ Journal Writing - Keep the "muse" engine will-oiled.
✔ Write about your favorite activity. Great way to practice with descriptions. It’s often easier to conjure up descriptions for something that you like.
✔ Object-Focused Free writing - Take an object and write a page focused on the object, whether it is a hand, purse, shoe, etc. It can be descriptions, metaphors, analogies, etc.

Week 3: Jumpstarting Writing
✔ Slide Show - Ideas for Jumpstarting writing - Out of the Box Thinking Ideas
✔ Randomly pick the Who, the Where, the What, and the When and practice putting it into a story, poem, or gag.
✔ Gag, Situation and Idea Finder activity.

Other weeks...
As these 1:1 class sessions are learner-directs, here are other possible Stop Motion themed ideas that will be done in these classes with the student:
✔ Continued discussion on Out of the Box thinking ideas / Ideas for “Jumpstarting” writing.
✔ Talk about Droodles, which involves have your mind create concepts from random objects/lines.
✔ Writing is Malleable - Its easier to change a piece of writing than it is to change most works of art.
✔ Point of view can make the difference in a story.
✔ Visual writing prompts.
✔ Onomatopoeia Sound Effects and Typography

This is a LIVE class and is NOT pre-recorded.
This class will be presented via cameras from the instructor. Students can interact with the instructor, as well ask ask questions during instruction. Students are expected to communicate with the teacher. Communication, visuals, and hands-on instruction are all the things that I are important in helping the students get a better understanding of the subject.

Please install Zoom on the same device as the art software being used. That way the instructor will be able to see what the student is doing and be able to help the student if he or she is having any difficulties.
Learning Goals
1. Students will learn to create new ideas through the whole brainstorming process.
2. Students will learn to select and use appropriate tools to gather ideas/thoughts.

Hi, my name is Raymond Mullikin. 👋

I am a professional cartoonist and credentialed teacher from San Luis Obispo, California.

I teach classes in Cartooning, Comic Book Printing and Publishing, 2D Cartoon Animation, Claymation/Stop Motion, Toy Figure Design, Video Game and App Coding, Creative Writing, etc.

I am also a professional illustrator/writer and Creative Director for Raytoons Comics. The Raytoons website is at Raytoons.Net. I have published cartoons in books, magazines, newspapers, and e-cards. I am an app designer who have designed my own games and software for schools and Appstores. I have also done past work in animation, creating animated film shorts for film festivals around the world.

I graduated from the University of Laverne with a Teaching Credential (2012) and a BA in Liberal Studies (2009). I also have certifications in Early Childhood Education, Technology and 2D Design. I've worked in education for 20+ years (including a few years in Special Ed) and have been doing contract teaching since 2009. I teach art and technology to children and adults of all ages.

How students approach a learning task can strongly influence the quality of their learning outcomes. For me, my approach is often very hands on (kinesthetic) with a lot of visual examples... That's how I've learned things, with a more creative approach. I have a lot of this in my instruction, with a mix of direct and interactive instruction with lots of Experiential Learning hands on!
It is also important to me to get feedback from both children and parents... Some kids have some very clever ideas! And, in teaching, there is always room for expansion of ideas and improving oneself.

I love drawing, comics, writing, creating my own games, and reading. Pretty much everything that I teach I enjoy and do professionally. I also enjoy teaching and thank all the parents and students willing to give me a try! 😃
