Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 12
Intermediate Level
This private tutoring is designed for each specific learner and what they need, reaching each learner where they are, assessing their present level and administering 1-on-1 instruction to improve their reading skills, reading fluency, vocabulary, critical thinking and writing skills. The consistent format used each week in their 50-minute lesson will help learners grow their reading and writing skills, expose them to fiction and non-fiction passages appropriate to the learner's reading level. Learners will learn to write expository summaries, opinions and persuade an audience to their point of view based on their understanding of non-fiction and informative texts.

Writing material will increase in complexity as learners continue with their 1-on-1 private tutoring. We'll start off simple so learners are not frustrated with reading challenges as they work through developing and honing their newly learned skills of inference, summarizing, comprehension, identify meanings of words, learn new vocabulary, proper grammar, punctuation, spelling, the composition of correctly formed sentences, paragraphs, essays and research papers.

Learners will learn how to write a summary, read various expository or narrative sources given by the Teacher and learn how to write their own summary. They will learn four different ways to write a summary, including identifying the overarching theme, main points, and how to conclude a summary and learn how to most effectively summarize the material in one to two paragraphs. Learners will share their summary with the Teacher and listen to and be open to their summary being critiqued by the Teacher.

Learners will learn how to write an opinion piece, read short stories, respond, form their own opinion, back it up with evidence [proof] with reasons from the text that support their opinion, and finally make connections to other texts, to themselves or the world. Learners will write their own opinion piece by introducing the topic of their writing, state an opinion, present their final piece.

Learners will write a persuasion piece, be given various prompts to write from, turn their persuasive piece into a presentation that they present orally, trying to persuade the Teacher to the presenter's point of view, presenting convincing arguments to defend his/her opinion and to persuade the readers to agree with his/her point of view or to take action [persuasion].

Learners will build self-confidence as they understand the process, written text, how to summarize, develop an opinion based on evidence and persuade their audience.

No matter what grade the learner is, their writing skill level, this 1:1 Ongoing Private Tutoring: Reading & Writing for Grades 4-12 [ELA/ESL] experience will put you ahead of your class.

I LOVE reading and writing! and helping children of all ages to be better readers and writers . . . the key to everything. I suppose my love for writing began as a young student myself. I read all the time and began writing short stories, poems, and even lyrics to songs I created. I've been a teacher, Principal and educator 50+ years, [I know, I started young], an online Tutor for seven years teaching reading and writing [and math] to students in the U.S.A., Africa, Asia and South America, loving every minute of it. My training to teach English, reading and writing skills has spanned many years. I have taught English to elementary, middle and high school learners as well as Adult and G.E.D. learners.

It's my belief that great readers become good writers, and I know that I can help your learner become one too.

I have a BA in Psychology, an MA in Education, Special Education and post-graduate work in School Administration. I've taught learners from the ages of 4 to seniors in urban, rural USA, Africa and South America, as well as ESL classes to children and young adults in China and a few other countries. I've taught special needs students as well as gifted learners. Simply put, I LOVE teaching!
