Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 4
These private sessions are created with your learner in mind and the goal of personal 1:1 instruction to help each individual learner reach their potential in mathematics [addition, subtraction, multiplication, division] with confidence.

This ongoing 1 to 1 tutoring class provides the learner a comfortable place where we address core math curriculum, standards and current math concepts in addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, [including fractions and decimals], depending on the learners level and need, addressing areas where the learner has struggles or just wants to build and strengthen their mathematical skills. I zero in on the area of need, moving the learner to a better understanding of how math operations work, growing their understanding and developing new skill sets.

Depending on the learner's math needs, we can cover the four mathematical operations. Learners can be given concentrate instruction so that they gain an understanding of addition, subtraction, multiplication fact families [learner dependent]. Younger learners will work on number recognition, the value of each number, sequence, manipulatives and how to use them, math facts, songs and stories. If it's addition/subtraction, learners will listen to addition and subtraction stories read by the Teacher, act out and retell stories, learn facts by seeing pictures of each number character for easy recall and memorization of basic facts through 10 plus 10 and higher, computation of equations, greater/less than, word problems, whole numbers, fractions and decimals and the operations used with each. Learners will gain an understanding of each operation and the process through the grouping of manipulatives, manually moving and drawing various objects, using graph paper, tiles or blocks, skip counting and finger tricks as they develop math concepts.
The sessions are designed to help the learner understand the math that they see.
Learners learn much easier using visual and kinesthetic methods that are represented by 3-D manipulatives, blocks, cubes, legos, or coins which are all invaluable tools for helping the learner see how Math facts work together.

For those working in the areas of multiplication and division, learners will gain an understanding of what the multiplication and division process is through the grouping of manipulatives, manually moving and drawing various objects in arrays, using graph paper, tiles or blocks. Learners will work on hearing the numbers in sequence as they skip count, listening to stories about each different fact family, act it out and retell the story, work with whole numbers, decimals and fractions as their skill level increases. Learners will sing multiplication and division songs cementing the concepts. They will practice finger tricks to learn and memorize the facts. Learners will have a CHALLENGE: a math riddle to answer.

Learners may need the 1:1 time with their tutor just once a week. For others, two tutoring sessions a week is highly recommend. I am here to provide individualized math instruction for each learner whether I work with them once, twice or even three times a week.

Private sessions can be scheduled upon request. Please contact me to schedule a specific day and time with me for your learner if you don't see the time you need. I can schedule sessions in as little as 24 hours with advance notice. I'm happy to work with you and try to accommodate a time convenient for your schedule.

So learners, put on your thinking cap and let the math fun begin!

For academic purposes, cameras and mics must be turned on for the duration of each lesson.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Master's Degree in Education from Indiana University
Being an educator for forty + years, I've taught all subjects to students K-8 which included math classes at all levels. I've taught special needs students and designed full curriculum for K-12 students. In addition, I have taught students online for seven years. When I was a young student, I thought I didn't like math because any thing above addition and subtraction seemed a little hard for me. The truth was, I didn't understand the fundamentals of math operations, even though I could calculate and get the right answers every time when adding or subtracting. This is why I am so passionate about learners understanding the concept and relationship to numbers and operations, because once they understand that, learners can build on the basic fundamentals taught at this age and excel in Math and really begin to love it as I do now.
