Class Experience
US Grade 5 - 8
Beginner - Intermediate Level
Once your student has the foundational skills of phonics down, then the game moves to the next level. In middle school, students are expected to engage with literature on another level - and sometimes they may need some additional support to get there. In my one on one reading comprehension & English Language Arts sessions, we can zero in on those specific skills that your child needs to succeed. Some areas of focus include: Reading Comprehension (Literature) - Being able to understand the written word, and make connections to the story. Reading Comprehension (Informational Texts) - Using reading skills to follow a set of steps, learn about a process, or gain more knowledge in other academic areas. Foundational Reading Skills - Sounding out words, reading with fluency, and developing a base of 'sight words'. Vocabulary - Expanding the student's knowledge of words and their meanings. Middle School Writing - Writing informative, opinion, and/or narrative texts, as well as the basics of writing mechanics such as punctuation and paragraph formation. Language - Learning about grammar rules, spoken language, and presentation styles. After discussing the student's needs, I will create a series of mini-lessons to address the deficit skills. In my laid-back teaching style, we will work together to find the right balance of practice, instruction, and reinforcement. I'm the type of reading tutor that goes with the flow. But what if your student has those skills, but you just want another set of eyes for an important project or report? Stumped on summer reading? I can help there, too! Looking for a full curriculum for reading comprehension - got that covered, as well!
