1:1 Mentoring and Writing Support

Designed just for your child, I can mentor your child to deal with specific life skills and challenges, or to support them towards very specific reading and writing project goals.

Class Experience

*PLEASE NOTE - This is not ongoing weekly tuition. I am not looking to give weekly regular 1:1 tuition, even for students I work with often. These one-offs are for specific short-term purposes - see the examples below. These are rare exceptions, designed to support the specific needs of a child. For general academic tuition, my small group classes writing classes will be the place to go.*

In these one-to-one classes, I will mentor and support your child to work through particular writerly and social challenges they are currently encountering.

These classes are solely for pupils that I already teach, and have been created to meet parents' requests for occasional 1:1 support, once I have already established a good social and learning relationship with a student. These sessions are for those times when a conversation one-to-one would be more appropriate than in a group.

If the 1:1 support is focused on specific speaking and writing goals, the idea is that we can work together and I can guide, teach and advise to help your child to meet specific project needs. For example:

- Supporting your child to write a letter that is meaningful to them
- Supporting them to edit a creative project that they have worked on for a long time
- Using creative writing activities and sensitive discussion to support the kinds of social challenges listed above.

The class might help your child to work through some social challenges, through our shared writing. For example:

- A child who may be worried about returning to school after lockdown
- A child who might be moving up to middle school
- A child who might benefit from social time, but struggle with group interactions

HOW WILL IT BE ORGANISED?
- In our conversations on Outschool, a parent might discuss a specific need that their child has. We might discuss it and recognise that these one-to-one sessions might be helpful.
- We find a mutually convenient time and I schedule our 1:1 sessions.
- Before I teach the session, the parent and the child share with me what they want to happen as a result of our one-to-one sessions
- I design our personalised sessions based on this info, and based on my knowledge from my ongoing relationship with the child

HOW WILL THE SESSIONS WORK?
- I will work one-to-one with your child for the 55 minutes of the session
- This will give us time to talk widely about whatever it is that are focusing on, whilst we complete activities together
- My style of teaching will already be known to your child, as they will be already a student of mine; I listen supportively, give them space to think and understand, and ask questions that help them to comprehend whatever it is they are working through. With humour and good listening, I am able to support children to feel comfortable talking about how they are feeling
- I will write to give feedback to parents after the class

WHAT MIGHT THE ACTIVITIES BE?

For creative writing-focused classes, we might explore a range of texts, co-create examples, play word games and edit texts that the child and I have each created. For socially-focused classes, we might play word games, create cartoons and go through slides which support kids' understanding of moving up to secondary/junior high/middle school. (Like in my So Ready! class).

Learning Goals

Students will feel supported to face the specific circumstances they are currently working through: these may be to do with social skills or the writing process.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
My confidence to facilitate these sessions comes from my experience of being a primary school teacher for ten years. Most of my current work as a specialist writing teacher involved reflective writing with children who are dealing with additional challenges in their lives. In addition to my work with schools, I have experience as a child/youth mentor and project leader with two charities, and have experience as a one-to-one mentor in these contexts.

In my role as an Assistant Headteacher, with a responsibility for the education and care of children aged 9-11, I have overseen a mentoring program, and served as an academic mentor for four students, boys aged 10-11, over the course of a year.
