Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 6
In this class, we will provide your learner with personalized and effective math instruction to help them improve their understanding and skills in math.

Our experienced and qualified teachers will work with your learner one-on-one to identify their strengths and weaknesses, and to tailor the instruction to their individual needs. Whether they need help with basic math concepts, algebra, geometry, or any other math topic, we are here to help.

Our goal is to help your learner develop a deeper understanding of math and how it applies to the world around us. We believe that everyone can learn math with the right instruction, practice, and support, and we are committed to helping your learner achieve their goals.

Receiving personalized one on one help with math can be such a powerful tool for a student’s learning. Learners who were previously struggling with math can begin to thrive and become quite successful in math as a result of having a tutor support their learning journey. Having that personalized and focused instruction can really make all the difference.

This class will be tailored to the learner - we can focus on homework help, work on extra practice, or review concepts that are unclear. We can even offer full curriculum 1:1 instruction!

So whether your learner is struggling with a particular math concept or just looking to improve their overall math skills, we invite you to join us. Let's work together to unlock their full potential in math!

We can help learners with any topics requested including, but not limited to, the following:
- number sense
- data literacy
- financial literacy
- pre-algebra
- algebra
- probability
- measurement
- geometric and spatial reasoning
- equations and inequalities
- patterns and relationships
- mathematical modeling

Mr. Christian Calvelo

Christian discovered his love for teaching when he was 17 years old as a private piano instructor. From there, he pursued a Business Management diploma from SAIT while tutoring Economics and went on to manage his own small business for 5 years. After gaining a breadth of knowledge in that field, Christian decided to get back into teaching and completed a three streamed degree (Kinesiology, Political Science, Sociology) as well as an Education degree from the University of Lethbridge.
He has over a decade of teaching experience and has taught Math to students of all ages. Christian has a passion for teaching Mathematics as he loves bringing a real-world connection to his students. He believes that finding ways to make learning fun is important for students to find passion and reach their full potential.
Outside of the online classroom, Christian teaches Elementary students, continues to teach Piano and Guitar, is a certified basketball referee, and loves to collect pinball machines.

Mr. Patrick Benitez

I am a professional engineer, educator, and martial arts enthusiast and am excited to be joining the Mind over Math Learning Center team.
I left the engineering field several years ago to pursue to my passion for teaching and mathematics which continues to be an extremely rewarding experience.
I’ve taught in both formal classroom and tutoring settings for a combined 4 years to both adults (post high school) and children including all elementary (SK to Grade 8) and most high school levels.
Outside of the classroom and since 2014, I continue to teach and work with children and adults as a martial arts instructor and as a President of a not for profit organization that enables families to practice martial arts. As a result of my experiences, including having had great role models for myself growing up, I know how important it is to have great teachers that inspire, guide, and appropriately challenge.
I believe in the learner’s potential. My teaching philosophy is not to dictate, but to guide and instruct in a way that proves to you the capabilities you had all along. The outcome is one of self-confidence and improved skills that you can take with you beyond our classroom setting and subject matter.
I look forward to meeting you in my class!

Mr. Mohammad Shahzad

Hi everyone!

My name is Mohammad and I’m what you would call a ‘Developer’ - which is a
fancy word for someone who finds most joy in being part of a young learner’s personal
development and growth. I love to recognize the potential in students and motivate them
towards achieving their personal and academic goals.

My teaching philosophy is that young learners do best when given praise and encouragement to
highlight their moments of excellence. I go out of my way to recognize small improvements and
help a struggling student realize their potential and become the best version of themself.

In that regard, I’ve been extremely fortunate to work as a teacher and academic coach for over
10 years with students from different academic backgrounds. In line with my teaching
philosophy, I provide academic support by helping students navigate their personal and
academic struggles and developing personalized learning goals and plans tailored to their
needs.

Having previously been in medical school at the University of Toronto, I’ve worked extensively
with child and adolescent patients in the clinical psychiatry setting to address their complex
psycho-social issues using counselling, motivational interviewing and psycho-education. This
has given me essential training in the interpersonal and communication skills necessary to
teach young students effectively.

I have also previously completed a Bachelor of Medical Science from Western University and a
Master of Science from the University of Toronto, and I’m currently pursuing my teacher
certification at Queen’s University.

I look forward to working with you!
