Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 8
Beginner - Advanced Level
I can provide lessons on many math topics including basic and multi-digit multiplication & division, all types of fraction and decimal problems, converting fractions to decimal and percent, solving ratio and proportion problems. I can work on a wide variety of Pre-Algebra and Algebra topics such as solving multi-step equations and inequalities, understanding linear equations, inequalities and linear systems.

I typically base my instruction on the topic(s) the learner is having difficulty mastering in their math class. I observe how my learner responds to instructions and begin with the basics skills and advance the difficulty level to based on their learning needs. I have discovered that sometimes basic math concepts were not mastered, causing more challenging ones to then seem impossible. By breaking skills down, I locate where the child is making his/her mistakes and then teach from that point. During this process, I make an effort to acknowledge correct work and/or math strengths whenever possible to give the learner a sense of accomplishment.

I use a white board to demonstrate math problems. I will expect the learner to solve the problem(s) on paper (or their own dry erase board) as I complete the work. I often ask the learner to show me their work or to state the steps as they are solving problem. My goal is to build the learners confidence so that he/she will be able to work independently.

I can also provide enrichment material. In some case, parents find that their child is not being challenged in math. I would be able to introduce some higher level skills that build on material the learner is currently working on. I can also provide practice for taking standardized test. I typically use sample problems from the internet or resources. I can also go over some test taking tips.

I have experience teaching fifth through eighth grade math, including Prealgebra and Algebra courses, in a classroom for 20 years. I have experience working with Zoom to tutor students, especially with Prealgebra and Algebra topics.
