Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 4
**If you do not see any sections listed, please message me to arrange a meeting time!***

Are you wondering how your child is really doing with their reading? Do you want to understand what specific skills they need to work on in order to continue to grow and improve as readers? Or maybe you are just looking for a second opinion on how your child is doing in reading? This one-time class could be just the solution! I am a qualified and experienced teacher (20 years in the classroom) who has conducted thousands of reading conferences like these in brick and mortar classrooms. I hold two Master's degrees, including one in Library Science. I'm happy to now bring my knowledge and experience to Outschool to help you understand your learner's strengths and weaknesses in the area of reading.
In this 1:1 class, I will meet with your learner and talk to them about their reading habits and preferences. I will listen to them read aloud to me from a book of their choice and discuss the book with them to assess their comprehension and overall reading skills. Following our 20-minute live meeting, I will prepare a detailed report outlining their current strengths as a reader and suggestions for some next steps and areas for growth. This will help you understand what specific skills your reader could work on to develop and help move their reading skills forward. Examples of some of the areas I will assess during the conference are decoding (ability to read/sound out the words), fluency, expression, comprehension, vocabulary, thinking skills (ability to ask questions, visualize, draw conclusions and make predictions, etc). In addition, I will recommend genres, authors and/or titles for further reading. The report will be sent to you via Outschool message within 48 hours of our live meeting. The cost of the class includes the time to prepare the report after our meeting.

IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOUR CHILD HAVE AN APPROPRIATE BOOK WITH THEM READY FOR THE CONFERENCE. Our 1:1 time will be limited and our meeting will be much more informative for me if your child has a good "just right" (neither too easy nor too difficult) book with them. If your child reads a book with me that is either too easy or too difficult then the feedback I am able to provide in the report may not be as accurate or helpful. I will not be able to provide any kind of refund if your child needs to take time during our conference to go find another book. Please be sure you watch the video that will appear in the classroom when you enroll, as I will give more explanation and advice about how to select a "just right" book.

**Please note, my report will NOT include a statement regarding whether your child is reading on grade level or not.** Given that Outschool learners come from all over the world and attend all types of schools and that each school or district has their own criteria and standards for what is considered on-grade level, this would be impossible to do with any accuracy. Rather, I will discuss particular specific skills that your child does well and some that they can work on improving, whether those might be appropriate for their age and grade level or not. This will be an assessment of where your child is now, rather than a judgment on where they should be.

I look forward to reading with your learner to help you learn more about them as readers!

I have twenty years of experience as an elementary classroom teacher and during that time I have conducted thousands of 1:1 reading conferences with learners. As a classroom teacher, I would use the information gathered from the conference to inform my classroom instruction, recommend further reading for the learner, help them to set goals, and prepare reports with information about student learning and progress to share with parents.
