Class Experience

Beginner - Advanced Level
This class will address a range of art genres including portraiture, the figure, still life & landscape. In the practical sessions we will engage in a variety of media and processes. Some example of these are observational drawing, colour theory, painting, printmaking, collage & sculpture.

Week 1: During our first session, we will respond to the work of renowned artists. We will practice using the language of composition. Vocabulary we will use to describe the formal qualities of artworks are the visual elements: line, shape, colour, form, value, space & texture as well as the visual principles: contrast, balance, unity, emphasis (focal point), rhythm, pattern & movement.

Week 2: We will learn about the context in which the artwork was created. Contexts are a combination of historical, social, political, cultural and personal information relevant to the work. This is a lesson in art history. We will talk about the art that influenced the artist as well as the art inspired by them. Your learner will be encouraged to ask questions and contribute their knowledge and understanding of the artwork and artist.

Week 3 & 4: These sessions will be about art making. Together your learner and I will develop responses to the artwork and genre we examined in the first two weeks. We will begin with media and processes your learner is familiar with and expand this gradually by engaging in new and challenging artmaking experiences.

My approach to teaching and learning is student centered. I individualize the experience for students and am mindful of learner’s strengths. I begin by building on those strengths and gradually challenge the student to explore less familiar processes, genres and media. I want students to feel comfortable making “mistakes” and in turn understand that we often learn significantly by making them.

There will be an effective balance of speaking and listening during these classes. If your learner would like to develop their English writing and reading skills, opportunities will be provided to do so.
