Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
The learner's needs will determine the lesson for each session. Some learners attending a traditional school want to improve language arts skills while others want to accelerate their language arts learning. Other learners are home-schooled and desire a weekly curriculum to compliment their homeschooling experience. What I love about 1:1 tutoring is recognizing each learner's needs and developing appropriate curriculum for each learner. Parents can make requests at least 24 hours before the first session to share desired learning outcomes, or I can work with the students during the first meeting using age appropriate lessons to guide me to design an individualized learning path. Each lesson is designed specifically for each unique learner. My lessons include an integrated approach to reading, writing, speaking, listening and thinking. Both literary and informational reading can be included as well as well as writing instruction that includes a variety of purposes and genres. Grammar is taught as a part of the writing process allowing learners to apply newly learned skills to their own writing. If you're looking for a language arts learning experience designed specifically for your child, this is the class for you!
Some sample lesson ideas:
1.Providing a writing prompt and guiding student through writing process from prewriting to drafting, revising, editing and final copy.
2. Exploring literary devices in a short story or novel.
3. Writing a literary response.
4. Understanding plot and character development in narrative writing.
5. Revising to create sensory details and sentence variety in writing.
6. Defending one's opinion in written and oral communication.
7. Developing "thinking strategies" to enhance critical thinking.
8. Researching a topic of interest and understanding how to cite evidence and paraphrase information.
My main goal will involve building learner-directed lessons based on learner needs, interests, and current ability. I can confidently provide lessons for anything related to language arts instruction for learners aged 10-14.
