1:1 Kindergarten and First Grade Guided Reading

This course is designed for kindergarten and first grade readers that could benefit from extra practice with reading, sight words, and phonics skills. 

Each class has three components: 
A) Sight Word Practice: We will go over a new sight word at the beginning of each class. Students will work together to complete activities with the sight word, and they will practice writing the word. 
B) Guided Reading: Each class will feature a new short story. We will start by making connections with the text and doing a picture walk. Students will practice reading the story together. We will go over any challenging words. Once the learners have had the opportunity to read through the text together, they will practice reading one at a time to work on fluency. 
C) Word Work: At the end of each class we will work on different phonics skills blending words and long and short vowels.

Students should have a good understanding of letter sounds for this course. The books we will read in the class have two to three sentences per page and some repititon. Here is an example of what you can expect to see from our story "Sports”: I like to play soccer. It is my favorite sport.

I will post a printable copy of the books we read in class as well as sight word practice sheets each week. These are optional, and can be used for extra practice outside of class.

Students will need pencil/paper OR white board/dry erase marker.
